Swiss SpaceDays 2007 at the Swiss Museum of Transportation, Lucern Switzerland.
2nd-3rd November 2007
Like last year, SGAC was present at the Swiss Astronautics Association yearly event. The Swiss Space Days aim to bring together experts and specialists from the space industry, official representatives of the national space office, enthusiasts from various space advocacy groups and students together with the public and schoolchildren.
During the two days of the events, youngsters from local schools had the opportunity to meet with professionals of the space sector, as well as ESA astronaut Claude Nicollier. Presentations focused around the history of space exploration, in the light of the 50th anniversary of the launch of Sputnik, the upcomming launch of the European Columbus Module as well as the role of Switzerland in the creation of the european space programme.
A team of parabolic flight students from Swiss technical universities (EPFL & ETHZ) did also present their work in order to inspire the younger generation to start a science or engineering career.
Two movies were also shown during the two days-event. The IMAX movie "Roving Mars" was shown for the first time in one of Switzerland's IMAX theater. The other film shown was Claude Nicollier's biographical documentary "Pour l'Amour du Ciel".
In the regular space exhibit hall of the Swiss Museum of Transportation, representatives of the Swiss space industry had booth put up to present their activities to the public. Space memorabilia from private collections were added to the regular exhibit for a one-month special exhibit.
Public interest was very high and the media covered the event in several local newspapers.

The Swiss Space Days aim to bring together experts and specialists from the space industry, official representatives of the national space office, enthusiasts from various space advocacy groups and students with the public and schoolchildren.
On the first day, a live radio-amateur connection took place from the museum hall with European astronaut Thomas Reiter onboard the ISS. Schoolchildren were able to ask questions during the few minutes available before the ISS disappeared behind the horizon. European and Swiss astronaut Claude Nicollier opened the discussion, making it the first time astronauts spoke together via radio-amateur during a public event.
This event was made possible thanks to the collaboration of the newly created Swiss branch of ARISS (Amateur-Radio on ISS), a volunteer working group devoted to developing and putting into operation the on-board amateur radio station, mainly for educational purposes.
During the afternoon, space conferences took place for schoolchildren during which two parabolic flight students teams from Swiss technical universities (EPFL & ETHZ) presented their work and inspired the younger generation to start a career in science or engineering. This was followed by a short presentation of the Swiss student satellite project “SwissCube” from EPFL as well as an inspirational presentation from Swiss astronaut Claude Nicollier. In the evening a public event took place where parents could join their children to listen to presentations about the state of Swiss space projects and research and another one about the Hubble Space Telescope by Claude Nicollier.
The following day the SRV’s General Assembly took place and after a joint lunch between space enthusiasts and representatives of the space industry, different presentations took place during the afternoon about various topics, including: the ARISS project, the participation of Switzerland in space projects, the benefits of space for meteorology, the human body in weightlessness as well as student parabolic flights.
Public interest was very high and media coverage was exceptional; the event was covered on two national TV evening news reports as well as in more than a dozen newspaper aticles.

SGAC was proud to be present in October of 2005 during a highly successful Space Day at the Swiss Air Force Museum near Zurich. This event won great media attention, mainly thanks to the presence of many industrial members, Mr. Werner Schäppi, which is training to become the first Swiss space tourist and last but not least a life teleconference from Houston by Swiss astronaut Claude Nicollier, who couldn't attend the event because of Hurricane Wilma. SGAC was represented at this event with a nice booth.
