The SGAC elections for a new Co-Chairperson in 2016 have been completed and we are pleased to announce the results.
After an exceptionally long period of discussion and interaction between the candidates and the Executive Office, 100% of all Regional Coordinators cast their vote. As in the past years, SGAC is proud to have attracted a number of highly qualified, dedicated volunteers as candidates. We are happy to see that the position of Chair of SGAC has become the goal of many volunteers in our organisation.
Out of all votes, candidates received:
Ali Nasseri (Canada/Iran) – 58,3 %
Athiye Jawad (Germany) – 0%
Kavya Manyapu (USA) – 0%
Lindsey Yee (USA) – 0%
Suresh Bhattarai (Nepal) – 41,7 %
We are happy to announce that Ali Nasseri will be the new Co-Chairperson of the Space Generation Advisory Council! He will be working alongside the new Chair, Stephanie Wan (USA).
Ali is an Early Stage Researcher at Institute of Scientific Interchange (ISI) Foundation as part of the Marie Curie Initial Training Network (ITN) WALL project. His work is focused on analytical modeling of magnetization dynamics in nanostructures. Prior to joining ISI, he conducted graduate research on surrogate based aerospace fuel modeling at the University of Toronto, and worked on system level modeling and design optimization of space systems at the Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) Lab and the Space Systems Research Center at K. N. Toosi University of Technology. He is also a graduate of the International Space University’s Space Studies Program 2014.
Since January 2012, Ali has been working actively with SGAC, first as a member of the Space Safety and Sustainability project group, and later in roles such as Executive Secretary, and member of the SGC 2014 local organizing committee. He is currently the Operations Manager of SGAC and outgoing co-lead for the SGAC SSS project group.
This is Ali´s reaction: “It is a great honor to be elected as co-chair! I thank the RCs for their confidence in me and look forward to working with the SGAC Executive Council to advance the SGAC vision.”
Minoo will be working closely with Ali in the coming two years: "Ali has been an active SGAC member for several years, and I have had the privilege of working with him as a Space Safety and Sustainability (SSS) Project Group Co-lead, Executive Secretary and more recently SGAC Operations Manager. His dedication to streamline SGAC processes to grow the organisation is truly commendable. I look forward to working with him as he takes on his new role as SGAC Co-chair. I would also like to thank out-going Chair, Victoria Alonsoperez for her dedication to SGAC over the past 2 years. On behalf of the SGAC Executive Office, I wish Victoria all of the best in the next stage of her career - needless to say I am sure she will be jet-setting around the world with even more innovative ideas!"
SGAC would also like thank our outgoing Chair, Victoria Alonsoperez (Uruguay) for her work and dedication to the organisation during the last two years. She volunteered to support the Strategic Partnership Team and as Advisory Board member, where she can still give inputs to the organisation and provide continuity to all projects. "It has been an exciting (and lack of sleep) year as I worked alongside Victoria to learn all of the activities SGAC has been involved in and as we expand as an organisation. While I have known Victoria since 2009, it's been an amazing journey to see how the both of us have advanced from being students to young professionals, and close collaborators to lead SGAC. While she will get a chance to rest more now that her Chair-womanship is complete, but I'm sure SGAC will always reach out to her to ask for her expertise as an SGAC Advisory Board Member" said Stephanie, taking over as Chair of SGAC.
This is what Victoria had to say: "When I was a little kid I used to dream about having an aerospace career. However, living in Uruguay that seemed very far away. All that changed when I met Space Generation Advisory Council and its members, who are young people passionate about space. I am extremely grateful for the people I met and the experiences I lived. SGAC will always have a place in my heart.
My term as Chair has ended but I will keep being involved with SGAC as an Advisory Board Member. I would like to thank Stephanie and Minoo, who are amazing colleagues and some of the most hard working women I have ever met. I would also like to congratulate Ali on being elected co-Chair and I am sure he will do a fantastic job together with Stephanie, Minoo, Jacob, and Ram. I expect to see a lot of growth of SGAC in the coming years!"
