The 3rd Asia-Pacific Space Generation Workshop (AP-SGW 2016) is a two-day regional workshop for university students and young professionals in the Asia-Pacific region to be held in Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines in November 2016 in conjunction with the 23rd Asia Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum (APRSAF-23). It will be co-organized by the National SPACE Development Program (NSDP) of the Philippines.

The NSDP was conceptualized to lay the preliminary groundwork and necessary infrastructure needed prior to the creation of the National Space Agency in the Philippines. Currently, the NSDP is crafting various roadmaps prior to the operationalization of the envisioned National Space Agency, such as the Space Research and Development Agenda, Satellite Development Roadmap, Satellite Data Sharing Policy, and Space Industry Development Roadmap. Aside from these major tasks, the NSDP also acts as the main point-of-contact of the Philippines for various space matters in the local and international scene.

It has been recognized that the Philippines has conducted various local and international space activities in the past, such as Agila-2 in the 1990s, the Philippine Space Science Education Program in 2011, and various CanSat and Water Bottle Rocket Competitions up to the present. Also recently, the Philippines has deployed its first Earth observation microsatellite, famously known as DIWATA-1, on April 27, 2016 from the International Space Station (ISS). Sustaining the momentum gained from these various space activities of the Philippines in both local and international space arena, the NSDP envisions to harmonize these activities under a general framework through the future National Space Agency. With these recent gains, specifically the deployment of DIWATA-1 and the efforts made by the NSDP, it marks the year 2016 as the golden chapter in the beginning of a new Space Era in South-East Asia region.

The AP-SGW 2016 is a two-day regional workshop for university students and young professionals in the Asia-Pacific Region and will be held at the University of the Philippines Los Baños, one of the seven constituent campuses of the nation’s premier university system - the University of the Philippines.

With AP-SGW, SGAC aims to encourage the engagement of the next generation on the topic of promoting Asia-Pacific regional collaboration in the space sector – the next generation perspective.

AP-SGW and SGAC

AP-SGW 2016 in conjunction with the 23rd APRSAF follows up the successful regional SGAC workshops, the 1st European Space Generation Workshop, held in February 2016 and 2nd South American Space Generation Workshop held in August 2016. AP-SGW 2016 will be the third SGAC regional event in Asia-Pacific Region, with the first and second installments successfully held in Tokyo, Japan in 2014 and Bali, Indonesia in 2015. With the unique existence of space faring nations with established satellite technologies and launching facilities, and space emerging economies looking forward to exploit space for good, the scope and importance of cooperation and synergy in the field of space is tremendous. AP-SGW aims at engaging tomorrow's space sector leaders in the region; the workshop will provide an ideal platform for delegates to have the opportunity to voice their opinions, exchange ideas on these pertinent issues, and network. Apart from developing innovative policy recommendations on crucial space issues through the brainstorming during the workshop, the SGAC also fosters a unique environment of students, young professionals, academia, agency and industry. AP-SGW 2016 aims to build up on the success of its previous installments and enhance focus on the key Asia-Pacific region, through inclusive participation, which is the largest growing space region in terms of space technology utilization and development.

To conclude the workshop, the output from the working groups will be presented at the AP-SGW and further submitted as SGAC recommendations to United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UN COPUOS), in addition to potentially presenting them at conferences.
