Polish Space Sector is moving on from the planning phase to the first operations. Polish Space Agency is nearly complete: POLSA has her staff and now the initial trainings, workshops and consulting activities are provided for the entrepreneurs. Polish space business entities possessed many European Space Agency (ESA) contracts. In the same time they are acting in the Horizon 2020 Space Area funds and creating new space-related or space-based products. The undergraduates, graduates and young professional also have a role in the commercial segment of Space market – especially in the downstream services.

Companies are ambitious and they are conquering new space market niches – especially satellite assembly and integration and space electronics design. New start-ups are created in downstream segment after Polish edition of Galileo Masters competition.

NGO’s are also very active. Students across whole country working with space related projects. The 2016 will be the year of diversification of students projects: Martian rovers, startospheric missions (by baloons and rockets) and probably also orbital experiments.

Young Space Activities Overview in Poland

Young people have few opportunities to get involve in hands-on, space-related projects. In Poland there are few, high active associations which lead their own projects, as well as are involved in ESA Educational Programmes. Young people can find space sector organizations in every big city in Poland, especially now, when the large number of technical universities has his own student group which is working on the Martian rovers.

The most important Young Space Activities in the recent year was:

a) European Rover Challenge (ERC): was a three-day event consisting of three separate (but linked logically and factually) parts: European Rover Challenge - international Mars rovers contest, European Mars Conference on topic "Humans in Space" and Science-Technology Picnic. The event was organized by Mars Society Polska, in cooperation with Planet PR, the Marshal Office of the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship, and the Regional Science-Technology Centre in Podzamcze near Chęciny. Won team from Canada (USST).

b) Startup Weekend Space. During this event young participants try to create startup from scratch. There was one requirement: startup product or service must be linked to the Space sector.

c) Galileo Masters (European Satellite Navigation Competition) Polish Edition. In this year in the European Satellite Navigation Competition (ESNC - „Galileo Masters”) Poland has the most number of applications, more than in countries where the navigation market segment is strong (like United Kingdom or Spain). Many proposals were received from the students groups and individuals.

Country-Specific Events in 2016

Professional governmental, business and scientific organizations/institutions

  • POLSA – Polish Space Agency: In the beginning of February 2015 POLSA began its activities. Earlier, in late 2014, Polish politicians have decided to locate this agency in the city of Gdansk and not in the capital Warsaw. The first director of POLSA is Professor Marek Banaszkiewicz.
  • Ministry of Economy: Ministry dealing with economy of Republic of Poland, also responsible for  relations with European Space Agency and for overall coordination of space policy (EU and PL).
  • Polish Agency for Enterprise Development (PARP): Government agency that has been providing support to entrepreneurs in the implementation of competitive and innovative projects. From this year PARP has also is responsible for operational assistance and relations with space industry.
  • Polish Space Industry Association “SPACE PL”: Gathers main actors in the field of the Polish space sector: companies & research institutes.  Founded 31st October 2012. The main goal of the Association is to strengthen the position of members in the national and international markets, as well as to promote collaboration with public administration representatives and non-profit organizations in order to define a consistent strategy to develop the Polish space sector.
  • Space Research Center Polish Academy of Science (SRC PAS)The only research institute in Poland whose activity is fully dedicated to the research of terrestrial space, the solar system and the Earth using space technology and satellite techniques. Since 1977 the SRC staff developed, constructed and prepared for launch over 60 instruments and participated in the experiments in more than 50 space missions. SRC PAS

Non-governmental organizations (NGOs), associations and groups

  • Students’ Space Association (SSA) of the Warsaw University of Technology: The most active student association related to space in Poland, founded in 1997. Already leading projects: sounding rockets, stratospheric balloons, thermal calculations for space projects and moon rover. Main authors of first polish cubesat PW-Sat. At this moment working on new cubesat: PW-Sat2 which probably will be lifted off in this or in the next year. Alumnus of ESA Education Programmes: ESEO, ESMO, Bexus, Parabolic Flight Campaigns.
  • Mars Society Poland (MSP):  Founded in 1999 is one of the most active division of the Mars Society. Focused on developing mars rovers and built a mars habitat in Poland. Thanks to well considered strategy of cooperation with technical universities and companies, MSP bring to built an advanced generation of polish mars rovers. In the last year MSP organized European Rover Competition where participated teams from all over the world. In this year second edition is just annouced.
  • Polish Rocket SocietyFounded 2010, gather enthusiasts of experimental sounding rockets. Most advanced rocket reached attitude of 2 km and crossed sound barrier.
  • Copernicus Project: A non-governmental organisation came to being in 2005. Main goal of the Copernicus is to spreading the idea of Cheap Access To Space by offering platform, which enables young, ambitious people to perform experiments and realise their own amateur scientific research. Copernicus team consists of experienced specialists of various domains and professions. We were joined by the same passion and willingness to discover things, that were already discovered a long time ago. The flagship projects of the association are: Near Space Program, Technical School and MiniSat project.
  • ARISS Polska (Amateur Radio on the International Space Station): Polish group in international  volunteer program which inspires students, worldwide, to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math through amateur radio communications opportunities with the International Space Station (ISS) on-orbit crew. Students learn about life on board the ISS and explore Earth from space through science and math activities. ARISS provides opportunities for the school community (students, teachers, families and local residents) to become more aware of the substantial benefits of human spaceflight and the exploration and discovery that occur on spaceflight journeys along with learning about technology and amateur radio.

Space-related services and magazines
