SGAC is proud to present the SGAC July 2014 Member of the Month: Stephanie Wan(YGNSS Co-lead, Strategic Partnerships Team)
Stephanie Wan is a System Analyst at Overlook Systems Technologies Inc. and provides support to NASA’s Space Communication and Navigation (SCaN) Office in Washington, DC. She graduated from American University in 2008 with a B.A. in International Studies, and a M.A. in International Science and Technology Policy, with a focus in Space Policy from The George Washington University in 2010.
During her educational studies, she focused on education and outreach, Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), small satellites (especially cubesats), Asia Pacific cooperation, space communications, non-profit organizations, and international development. Her international studies and travel interests have led her to live abroad in Belgium, China, Japan, and South Korea. In addition to her Masters studies, she was the President of the GW Space Society (GWSS), the student organization to gather the young space professionals, current space policy students, and alums in the city. She has interned for a variety of organizations and companies, including: NASA, SpaceWorks Commercial, the Federal Communications Commission and SRI International.
She is currently one of the Youth for GNSS (YGNSS) project co-leads and part of the Strategic Partnerships Team in the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC), an international non-profit organization that brings young space enthusiasts together to provide a voice in space policy. Through her activities with SGAC, she has been able to attend UN meetings and international space conferences around the world to support education and outreach.
Andrea Jaime (Spain) and Stephen Ringler (USA), nominated Stephanie, here is their quote:
We would like to nominate Stephanie Wan, YGNSS Co-Lead and member of the Strategic Partnership Coordination Team, for her great dedication to not only those two teams, but the entire organisation. Stephanie has played, and plays, a great role on the involvement of NASA SCaN with SGAC, as well as our representative at the ICG every year. She has attended and served as SME for many years now at the Space Generation Congress, and has been always an asset at the last Fusion Forums.
Now, as member of the Strategic Partnership Coordination Team, she plays a fundamental role, helping to grow the network of professionals and organisations partnering with SGAC. As an example, Stephanie was able to bring on-board a new sponsor to support the GNSS Workshop held in China last year, and last month during the Fusion Forum and the Space Symposium in Colorado Springs, she made very new valuable contacts, that should likely bring great benefits for our organisation, and our members.
In the meantime, she continues to support SGAC from Washington DC, home of the US Space Policy.
Here is Stephanie's reaction:
I am honored to be selected as the July Member of the Month. I want to highlight all the YGNSS team members that have helped support and continue to drive the project's activities over the years, as the benefits and experiences I received from SGAC would definitely not have been possible without them. SGAC has been like an extended space family to me, and I am always excited to meet new friends and reconnect with old ones every time I'm at a space event. Also, I would like to thank NASA SCaN and my current company, Overlook Systems Technologies, as I am fortunate to receive their constant support to participate in SGAC activities and to grow as a young space professional.
Victoria Alonsoperez, SGAC Co-chair:
Since I met Stephanie at SGC 2009 in Deajeon I could see how active and helpful she has been to SGAC. She has been the lead of a Project Group, helped in the organization of SGCs, has been Subject Matter Expert at SGCs and is now part of our Strategic Partnership Team. Therefore, I believe that she really deserved to be the Member of this Month. Congratulations!
