SGAC membership has been steadily growing throughout the years. Among our membership there are many incredible young space enthusiasts who should be recognised for their hard work and contributions to SGAC. In December 2009, the SGAC Executive Council decided to acknowledge one member per month for his or her outstanding work and contributions to SGAC and its goals.
We are proud to present 2012 April Member of the Month: Michael Brett
Michael Brett is a consulting project manager and systems engineer with a wide range of experience on projects as diverse as aircraft mission planning software, snow sports performance tracking, helicopter simulators and safety analysis for the HIFiRE hypersonics research program. He is currently the project manager for the Antarctic Broadband, a new enterprise aiming to deliver broadband satellite services to Antarctica.Michael has been SGAC’s Treasurer since October 2006 and has attended three SGC’s as a delegate in Houston in 2002, Sponsorship Manager for SGC 2005 in Fukuoka and moderator at SGC 2009 in Daejeon.
He has also been involved in the Australian space community for many years assisting the Australian Youth Aerospace Association, Royal Aeronautical Society, AerospaceFutures conference and National Space Society.
Joyeeta Chatterjee, Regional Coordinator for the Asia Pacific, nominated Michael:
It is my pleasure to nominate Michael Brett, the outgoing Chair, as the Member of the Month for April 2012. Michael has been associated with SGAC for almost a decade. His contributions as Treasurer, then as Co-Chair and Chair, have been instrumental in the steady organisational growth of SGAC. In the past year, he has led SGAC to remarkable milestones through his hard work and dedication. His clear vision and leadership skills have been extremely beneficial for SGAC. I think the fact that he has been taking calls for the monthly Executive telecons at 2am throughout the year reflects his commitment, and deserves a special mention here. It was truly a pleasure working with him and he will surely be missed by all of us.
Here is SGAC's Outgoing Chair and April MoM, Michael Brett's, reaction:
"I am really touched to be named SGAC’s Member of the Month for April 2012. For the past ten years I’ve been a member, since our first congress in Houston in 2002, the SGAC family have helped make working in the space industry so much more enjoyable and rewarding. Together we have built an organisation and social network recognised by as the peak body for university students and young professionals in the space community – it has been an absolute pleasure to contribute to that journey. My two years as co-Chair were particularly challenging and enjoyable, I’ve had the pleasure of working with a fantastic team who have helped me hone my skills in governance and leadership and I’d highly recommend the job to anyone. I’m reminded that no one actually is ever ‘in charge’ of SGAC, we just have the opportunity to be stewards of the organisation for a while. Our responsibility is to those who come after us, to the next-next generation of space leaders who will make the world an even better place. I’m pleased that I’ve still got a few years left as an SGAC member and I look forward to what we can do next! "
From SGAC Chair, Catherine Doldirina:
I am so pleased that our outgoing Chair, Michael Brett, is Member of the Month! I am sure that this is in recognition of his role as the leader of the organisation for the past couple of years. Working with Michael was a great learning experience, since hardly anyone else has been active within the SGAC for such a long time. He cares a lot about the organisation and, as Chair, has devoted (and as a new member of the Advisory Board, I hope he will continue to devote!) a lot of time to overseeing and guiding its activities. I am happy to have joined Michael as Co-Chair, and just want to say thank you and congratulate Michael Brett on becoming Member of the Month, which, in fact, is more correct as "Member of the Year"!
From SGAC Deputy Executive Director, Andrea Jaime:
Michael Brett has been a remarkable member of SGAC for a long time. Together with Agnieszka, he has been Co-Chair, and he is now the outgoing Chair of SGAC. He has done a great job for SGAC, bringing professionalism, dedication, and growth during his term. I have learned a lot from him, especially about how SGAC works, and the direction in which the organisation is going. Not only do I consider him as Member of the Month, but as Member of the Year. Congratulations, Michael!
