SGAC and OHB are pleased to announce the winners of the joint OHB Competition for 2017. The competition enables two outstanding SGAC members to attend the 16th Space Generation Congress and the 68th International Astronautical Congress in Adelaide, Australia.
Based in Bremen, Germany, OHB AG is a European aerospace and technology company. Their two business units offer international customers sophisticated solutions and systems. With 30 years of experience in high technology, together with integrated skills in the areas of space technology and telematics, OHB is ideally positioned as one of the leading independent forces in the European aerospace and aeronautics industry. OHB offers solutions addressing the entire value chain for satellite development, construction and operation, data transmission and processing as well as the development and construction of scientific payloads and aerospace/aviation structures. Their goal is to harness existing growth potential in the German and European telematics, aerospace and security programmes and to extend and consolidate their leadership in the European micro-satellite segment on a sustained basis.

The winners are:
Manfred Ehresmann is currently a PhD student at the Institute of Space Systems of the University of Stuttgart working in the field of systems engineering on optimized generic spacecraft design.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Stuttgart in Germany, where he joined the local student group to gain first practical experience by working on the European Student Moon Orbiter. He was a founding member and acting chairman of the Small Satellite Student Society at his university (http://www.ksat-stuttgart.de/en/society), which started out with just eight members in 2014. By now the Society has over 70 members and multiple on-going projects. Most recently, the student team supervised by him was able to secure an experiment slot on the International Space during the “Überflieger” competition of the German Aerospace center with his idea for a ferrofluid-based pump, which offers significant improvements on lifetime of mechanisms in space. Furthermore, he worked on the CubeSat projects CAPE and MIRKA2, the sounding rocket experiment MIRKA2-RX, as well as supervising the sounding rocket experiment ROACH.
“I feel honoured and are extremely grateful for being awarded the Scholarship of the OHB competition. I am very excited about the opportunity to talk about the use of massdrivers for Asteroid Mining at the SGC and hope that it will be a productive input for future off-Earth industrial activities.”
Enrique Garcia Bourne
Enrique is a French and Spanish space engineer and entrepreneur. Having grown up in France, Spain and Luxembourg, Enrique studied in the United Kingdom, where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Bath, then a Master’s degree in Astronautics and Space Engineering from Cranfield University. He then spent two years working in management, first as a Management Consultant at KPMG, then as a Strategy Analyst at the Transport Systems Catapult. He then left the UK and settled in Nice, in France, to launch his start-up company, O’Sol, which develops autonomous mobile solar generators using a deployment technology inspired from satellites.
Enrique has always been passionate about space. He has a particular interest for our neighboring celestial bodies, including Near-Earth Objects and planetary bodies. His Master thesis at Cranfield University focusses on the systems and programme design of an interception mission for commercial asteroid mining. As part of his work with O’Sol, he is currently also developing a lunar variation of the system, dubbed O’Moon, with the aim of rapidly and autonomously building an electrical infrastructure on the Moon.
“I feel very honoured to see my work recognised and rewarded with this scholarship. Thanks to this scholarship, I will have the opportunity to present my work in front of the community of my peers, which will help me grow as an individual and advance my project.”
