Welcome to the page of SGAC Philippines! The year 2013 has a lot of exciting space science activities and events in store within our island nation and we look forward to your participation!
Despite having minimal exposure in the space science community in the past decades, the Philippines recently experienced a growth in space science education and research. This is mainly due to the momentum generated by the 2009 International Year of Astronomy which paved the way for increasing the number of people who are active in astronomy and space science. In addition, an increasing number of universities are becoming active in space science through physics, engineering and other fields such as agriculture and geology. Being at its infancy in the country, space science has a tremendous potential in terms of academic and economic benefit that needs to be tapped, nurtured and developed in the future.
Previous space science related events have focused on increasing awareness in astronomy and education such as public stargazing session, astronomy lectures and water bottle rocket competitions. For this year, several high-profile events are in line at various locations throughout the country. Most of these activities are managed by government institutions, universities and university-based student organizations, astronomy groups and private companies.
