SGAC Celebrates 15 years!

30 July, 2014

Many of our long standing members and advisors know it, some of our newest members are just beginning to realise it: The Space Generation Advisory Council in Support of the United Nations Programme on Space Applications, or as we like to call it "Space Gen", is now 15 years old!

Happy 15th Anniversary, SGAC!

On a day like today 15 years ago in July 1999 over 160 people from 60 nations attended the Space Generation Forum in parallel with the UNISPACE III conference at the United Nations in Vienna. During the event, the participants developed ten recommendations, which were combined into the "Space Generation Forum: Visions and Perspectives of Youth".

Of these ten recommendations, five were integrated into the Vienna Declaration. One of the recommendations was "To create a council to support the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, through raising awareness and exchange of fresh ideas by youth. The vision is to employ the creativity and vigour of youth in advancing humanity through the peaceful uses space". This was the founding statement of the organisation that SGAC has become today.

In this 15 years, SGAC has seen a great growth not only in number of members, but also partners, projects, and impact in the community. SGAC has hired three Executive Directors, opened the Vienna Office in 2006, and inaugurated the second major annual event in 2012. SGAC has also been the incubator of initiatives such as Yuri's Night or the Earth Flag, and continues supporting many regional and national activities.

Since SGAC is a young and very dynamic organisation, we have had many talented and motivated people furthering our cause over the years. Please join us in celebrating 15 years of SGAC and all those who have helped in shaping the organization into what it has become today: a thriving community of more than 5000 young people from around the world working together to get our voices and ideas heard. Thank you!

And today our intern, Reinhard, has prepared a little video to show some people, activities, and achievements of SGAC in the past 15 years. Enjoy!
