Welcome to the page of SGAC Belarus! Our country has a long standing history of participation in space-related programs and activities as a former member of the USSR. A new era in Belarusian space industry has just recently begun with the approval of Belarusian space research and peaceful exploration program from 2008 to 2012 by the Council of Ministers. The programme mainly aimed to advance the Belarusian economy and satisfy the demand of state agencies and citizens of Belarus for space information. National Space Programme designed for a period from 2013 till 2017 focuses on developments of technologies of Earth remote sensing (ERS), including data obtained by Belarusian Spacecraft (BSC).
Belarusian Spacecraft (BSC) has been launched on July 20, 2012, from Baikonur. The data obtained by BSC is used by different agencies. For example, hardware and software technology for state forest resource accounting and assessment of plantations damaged by exposure to adverse climatic factors have been developed for forestry enterprises. Institute for Land Reclamation conducts monitoring of agricultural lands. In interests of the Ministry of Emergencies, a pilot program-information complex “Monitoring-NS” provides detection of abnormal situations at petrochemical and natural gas industries. Belarus and Russia plan to create a joint venture to sell data from satellite orbital constellation consisting of BSC and Russian “Canopus-V”.
The main scope of works in the field of space research is performed by more than 20 scientific and industrial organizations in Belarus (coordination function and state regulation of work is performed by the National Academy of Sciences). Belarus produces element base, devices and complete systems that are used for the manufacture of space technics, range is constantly increasing. There is a positive flying practice of use of spacecraft equipment and production technologies from Belarus. Main strategic partner of Belarus is Russian Federal Space Agency (“Roscosmos”). Belarus is actively cooperating in space activities with neighbor countries, e.g., signed an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the exploration and use of outer space for peaceful purposes with Russia and Ukraine. The preparation of intergovernmental agreement with the National Space Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan is in progress.
In May of 2013, the Belarusian State University together with Russian Moscow, Samara, and Omsk Universities started a “System Soyuz-Sat”, joint project to build and launch a new SmallSat and three nanosatellites for Ionospheric studies and to study possible improvements in space telecommunications, Earth observation, Space debris monitoring, and high bit rate transmission.
On June 2013, Belarusian delegation has spoken at 56th session of Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS), in Vienna (Austria). Belarus has made application for membership in the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, and confirmed that it fully supports the UN principles and treaties on the use of outer space for peaceful purposes (Belarus has signed and ratified the Outer Space Treaty, the Agreement on the Rescue of Astronauts, the Convention on International Liability for Damage Caused by Space Objects, Convention on Registration of Objects Launched into Outer Space). Resolution adopted by the General Assembly on 11 December 2013 #68/75 declared Belarus the member of the Committee.
On January 31, 2014, Belintersat-1 project was announced, which provides for manufacture and launch of telecommunication satellite in cooperation with Chinese company “The Great Wall” (who will be actual contractor of the project). The cost of the project is estimated to be around 300 mln USD. It was stated that this satellite will be the first step in building of Belarusian system of satellite telecommunication.
On December 11, 2014, space borne Videospectral System (VS) built by Belarusian State University was delivered on board of the International Space Station. At the moment VS works on the program of “Hurricane” space experiment which aims at research of process and consequences of natural and technogenic events and catastrophes. VS is designed for Earth remote sensing with high spatial resolution colour photos, and also receipt of spectral reflectance of emission reflected by Earth surface.
Young Space Activities Overview in Belarus
SGAC has only recently reached Belarus, and at the moment there is not much activity in the field of space education for the young. In the course of establishing the space research programme, the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus has become a coordinator and it remains to be seen if and how national activities will create awareness for space-related subjects. There are plans to develop information space technologies and assimilate them in various areas of social and economic activities. The programme is designed with the country’s economic potential in mind and taking into account budget and extra budget funds. SGAC hopes to be a part of the new era of Belarusian space by giving an opportunity to young people to grow, develop their network, and build their knowledge and leadership skills.
