Yuri's Night 2009

April 12th 2009.

Yuri's Night of course. A time for fun, dancing, partying, celebrating space!!!

Problem. April 12th 2009 = Easter

Solutions?!

This is something we're going to have to figure out. It will be a significant test of Yuri's Night. We have many options. One is to have parties on Saturday night. A countdown to Yuri's Night.

I have also piloted a program this year to have custom made chocolate coins produced with the Yuri's Night logo and the text "Yuri's Night" "April 12th". These will be at the Goddard and Buffalo parties this year. The idea is that such items can be used to celebrate Yuri's Night on Easter.

Any other thoughts?

Easter problem

I vote for a Saturday night party with a "big bang" at midnight .. that's what we'll do in Stuttgart, Germany.

Also, this might be a really good opportunity to try to achieve a real "world space party" by handing over from one party to the other through all time zones. We could schedule that around midnight, when all parties should be running and full ...

International Astronomical Year

One more thing that just came to my mind:
2009 is the International Astronomical Year ... so it might be an idea to have a special focus on the combination of spaceflight and astronomy, such as space-based observatories, both actual flying and future ones (Hubble, XMM, James-Webb, Herschel, Planck, etc.).
As a global "theme" so to say.

sat night party

I think that having most parties on Saturday night might solve some of the problem. But we're unlikely to see the turn out or the number of parties we had this year. The other option is that is always possible to celebrate Yuri's Night the week before or after. Its been done before.

mh what a day!

It is a beatiful day as we remember important events occured in the past.I agree with BradChad that It can be done a week before or after so as to give people a chance to celebrate the two events fully.

The moon

As we know, Easter always falls shortly after the full moon (April 9th 2009). We could use this to focus on Yuri's night 2009 on the moon. I know my first facination with space started with the moon... and now I'm studying astrophysics! It might just get other people as fascinated about space as i am.
