The Romanian microsatellite GOLIAT, produced by a team of young graduates of the Bucharest University and Bucharest Polytechnic University under the coordination of the Romanian Space Agency, has been selected by the European Space Agency for launch on the maiden flight of VEGA, the new European rocket. The lift-off is scheduled for December 2008.

The satellite – designed and built in Romania between 2005 and 2007, will carry two scientific experiments and an Earth observation camera. The whole system weighs one kilogram and is in the form of a cube with the side of 10 centimeters. The experiments and the ground systems necessary for the communication and mission control have been completed with the support of the Romanian Space Agency, of the Institute of Space Sciences, and of the BitNet and ELPROF enterprises. The GOLIAT mission is the first one to be exclusively completed by Romania, and it has an educational and experimental character. The satellite is the product of a modern program of microsatellite technology developed by the Romanian Space Agency. The project has been co-financed by the National Authority for Scientific Research within its Excellency Research program.
