YGNSS is an active team of students and young professionals which aims to bring the maximum benefits of GNSS to the future society. It is part of the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) Initiatives. SGAC supports the International Committee on GNSS (ICG), an international forum for cooperation on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) recognized by the United Nations.
Background
International Committee on GNSS (ICG)
The International Committee on GNSS (ICG) is an international forum to discuss cooperation on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) which aims to promote the applications of GNSS to maximize the benefits of GNSS to people around the world.
It is the only existing mechanism that brings all GNSS actors together: Matters such as Interoperability and compatibility of current and planned GNSS systems, including GPS, Galileo, GLONASS, Beidou/Compass, and other augmentation systems are discussed at a government level, and views are exchanged between the Service providers and the users group of GNSS.
The result of discussions and actions taken by ICG will define the international development in space-based positioning, navigation, and timing services, which in turn will influence every state, business, and individual, who are becoming increasingly more dependent on the use of GNSS.

Project Team on ICG/GNSS - YGNSS
A Project Team on ICG/GNSS was conceived by a group of young minds who recognized the growing importance of GNSS and its benefits to society, which can be furthered by the cooperation among the GNSS actors, as aimed for by ICG.
As part of the young generation that would most benefit from the current GNSS development, the group noticed that it is part of their responsibility to secure and maximize the benefits of GNSS to the future society, thus established a Project Team on ICG/GNSS within SGAC. The Team was named YGNSS.
Composed of students and young professionals of diverse background and nationalities actively engaged in space, SGAC Project Team will be able to play a meaningful role in the international development of GNSS through its activities, particularly in the areas of education & outreach and promotion of international cooperation in GNSS.
Aim & Objective
The Project Team aims to bring the maximum benefits of GNSS to the future society by playing a role in the international development in GNSS.
The Objectives of the Project Team are to:
- Promote international cooperation in GNSS and GNSS applications
- Promote GNSS education & outreach
- support ICG and its secretariat, in particular Working Group C on Information Dissemination
- Reflect the perspectives of Youth on international GNSS policies
Activities
The activities of the Project Team will include the following:
- Promotional Activities: The Team will conduct activities to promote GNSS education and outreach, international cooperation in GNSS, and GNSS applications. The ideas for the Projects will be drawn from team members and external consultation.
- Study and Discussion: Through an online Forum on the SGAC website, the Team will monitor the general technological development and international cooperation in GNSS, including the activities and outcomes of ICG. Members will exchange information and discuss relevant policy issues.
- Youth and GNSS: The Team will conduct a series of studies on Youth & GNSS. This will include case studies on the uses of GNSS services by young generation and surveys on their perspectives on GNSS-related issues.
- SGC: Each year the Team will gather at the Space Generation Congress. This will serve as an impetus for the team's activity and provide the members aforum to communicate with other Project participants and help develop their leadership.
In the past year, outcomes of activities will be presented at SGC, ICG, ISU Symposium, UN COPUOS S&T Subcommittee Meeting, PNT Advisory Board Meeting and other relevant forums.
