  • SGC History

The Space Generation Congress was born out of the need of the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) to bring youth together and create a worldwide network of young space enthusiasts who will lead humanity in space in the coming decades. SGAC took form after the 1999 UNISPACE III conference (the Third United Nations Conference on the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space) in Vienna, and was charged to make recommendations to the UN committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UN COPUOS), through raising awareness and exchange of fresh ideas by youth.

The SGC invites up to 130 delegates from across the globe through a competitive selection process to come and discuss key space issues. The discussion groups are very broad and range, for example, from engineering, to public outreach, through life science.

The annual Space Generation Congress is held in conjunction with the IAC and endorsed by the United Nations Office of Outer Space Affairs.

The official language of the Congress is English.
