SGAC membership has been steadily growing throughout the years. Among our membership there are many incredible young space enthusiasts who should be recognised for their hard work and contributions to SGAC. In December 2009, the SGAC Executive Council decided to acknowledge one member per month for his or her outstanding work and contributions to SGAC and its goals, and we continued this until today.
SGAC is proud to present the SGAC February 2015 Members of the Month: Arno Geens
Arno is a Belgian wearer of many hats: Visual Strategist, Space Researcher, Innovation Advocate and Paramedic.
He started his career as a Paramedic and Disaster Manager for the Belgian Red Cross before being reborn as a Graphic Designer. He co-started and runs JosWorld, a full-service Visual Communication Studio in Brussels, and had a parallel career as Broadcast Design Consultant for national and international television productions. He was the co-founder and Vice-President of the European Young Innovators Forum (EYIF) in charge of Digital Platforms, dealing with EU-institutional and transatlantic innovation policies - bridging the gap between Europe and Silicon Valley. His passion for space and technology led him to follow the Masters in Space Studies at ISU, after which he worked as Visual Strategist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Los Angeles where he communicated about deep space missions, talked to robots, played with exotic materials and contemplated about future space endeavours.
Currently Arno works as Art Director and Graphic Designer at JosWorld where he focuses on design strategy and human centred design. Happy to keep one foot in the space sector he is also SGAC's Material Designer, aiming to develop and maintain a consistent design approach in all SGAC related communications.
Arno holds a MA in Graphic Design and Multimedia from Sint-Lukas University College of Art and Design in Brussels, Belgium, and a MSc in Space Studies from the International Space University in Strasbourg, France.
He is a US State Department IVLP alumni and a staff member of the Belgian red Cross and the Space Generation Advisory Council, and has been awarded for his services to the homeland.
Minoo Rathnasabapathy, Jan Svoboda, and Reinhard Tlustos nominated Arno.
Minoo Rathnasabapathy, SGAC Executive Director:
"Arno has worked tirelessly over the past month on several SGAC outputs including the SGC and SA-SGW logo, event brochures and 2014 Executive Summary. Thanks to Arno's work, SGAC has updated their output to be more dynamic, professional and streamlined. His professionalism and attention to detail should be commended."
Jan Svoboda, SGC 2015 Congress Manager:
"Arno did an exception work in recent months and significantly improved the quality of the PR and Communication materials used by SGAC. He has been contributing to preparation of generally all recent SGAC events - making sure that our materials are visually consistent and professionally looking. In recent weeks, Arno supported multiple projects including the preparation of the 2015 Space Generation Congress and SGAC PR materials for Ilan Ramon Conference in Israel and he managed to deliver exception work on very challenging schedule. For all these reasons, I would like to nominate Arno as "Member of the Month" and I would like to thank him for all the work he is doing for SGAC."
Reinhard Tlustos, PR&Comm Co-lead:
"I would like to nominate Arno for member of the month. While he usually works behind the scenes his work gets seen by many. Arno uses his professional experience to design new logos and to update the looks of many important SGAC documents, like the Executive Summary 2014.
While many SGAC members contribute the content for our Annual Report - Arno is the guy who makes it look professional and graphically pleasing - an important factor when showing these documents to potential new members and sponsors.
I would like to personally thank Arno for his great work and look forward to seeing many more updated and modernised designs from him."
Here is Arno's reaction:
“Thank you all for this nice nomination. I am happy to work with, to support and to be inspired by so many young and motivated people that work so relentlessly to get their message across the space sector, and it is nice to see that my work is appreciated and respected. As Reinhard mentioned: I work mostly behind the scenes and don't take much credit for my realisations, and I don't need to. If my work contributes to SGAC's standing as a respected player in the field, I am content!
Even though at the moment I am not professionally involved in the space sector anymore it still gives me a good feeling to be part of this strong network of motivated and like-minded people!"
From the SGAC Chair, Chris Vasko:
"Many of us in SGAC work on little projects and tasks which are not always visibile in our community - Arno's work, however, is something we all know and see. Our documents and their visual style are his domain and he has been doing a great job to improve the quality and the looks of our logos, PR material and documents. Thank you Arno for being such a patient member of the team!"
