SG [Benin] | Abomey-Calavi 2022

SG[Benin] 2022 is the first ever Space Generation Advisory Council local event in Benin and in a West Africa francophone country. It is an in-person event happening at University of Abomey-Calavi, in the City of Abomey-Calavi.

SG [Benin] will work on the contribution of the space sector to the socio-economic and technological development of Africa and Benin. SG [Benin] focuses on how best to harness the sector’s resources to achieve the African Union’s SDGs and Agenda 2063 and create inclusive and equal societies for all Africans. This SG [Benin] held at University of Abomey-Calavi will be the first international space industry event hosted in Benin Republic.

Space science and all technologies which come from since 1960s help humanity to make important achievements and progress in everyday technology, industry and socio-economic development. In Africa, we are still behind in space sciences, although there are a lot of development challenges we can tackle by using space technologies. There are a few countries that are on top of the most advanced in this race to space, but the majority of African countries are still behind. Government and different authorities are still sceptical about the role and the importance of space sciences to solve our current problems like access to water, disaster management, climate change, and promotion of STEM, although there are a lot of space enthusiasts in those countries. It is then hugely important to show how space technologies can benefit all, even the poor African countries. The UN and African Union see the capital importance of using space technologies to overcome our problems. They place Space science in a major role to help achieve SDGs and 2063 Agenda as a motor of innovation.

To demonstrate this, SG [Benin] will gather space industry experts and young space enthusiasts to think about how space sciences can be used to tackle every African problem such as economic development, innovation and technology, access to water and food.

At the Benin chapter of SGAC we believe that this outstanding event will put light on space sector actors in Benin and attract the national authorities’ attention on the importance of space industry and the benefits it can afford to the development.

SG[Benin] has as objective to provide a clear roadmap on how the space sector can help to make UN SDGs and AU 2063 reality by showing the importance of space technologies to those goals and demonstrate how space technologies can benefit all African countries. This event will gather space industry and young space enthusiasts from Benin and all around Africa.

We clearly hope that this event will help :

  • Understand how space science can contribute to the development of STEM, scientific research and innovation in Benin and Africa,
  • take the measure of the contribution of the space sector to economic development
  • Understand how we can fight against global warming, hunger, access to water and sanitation using space resources.

Event theme : Roles and Impacts of Space sector in achieving Sustainable Development Goals and Africa Union agenda.
