SUMMARY:Space Generation Congress 2022
DESCRIPTION:The Space Generation Congress (SGC) is SGAC’s annual meeting in support of the United Nations (UN) Programme on Space Applications. Top university students and young professionals with a passion for space will travel from all around the globe to attend three days of the 19th SGC. Up to 150 delegates will enjoy an inspiring and resourceful engagement with their peers at the congress\, held in Paris\, on September 14-16 2022\, prior to the 73rd International Astronautical Congress (IAC). Delegates will gain exposure to perspectives on space issues from the world’s leading space organisations\, including: the International Astronautical Federation (IAF)\, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)\, and the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UN COPUOS). In demonstrating the symbiotic relationship\, leaders from these space organisations gained fresh\, innovative and bold perspectives from the incoming space generation. Several sponsors along with a committee of volunteers are supporting the preparation of the 19th SGC. Without the support of SGAC’s dedicated volunteers and the continual support of our partners and sponsors\, the 19th SGC would not be possible.

SUMMARY:Our Giant Leap series on the astronaut selection campaign
DESCRIPTION:In 2021\, the European Space Agency launched a new wave of recruitment to select the next generation of astronauts. In 2021\, Our Giant Leap (now Diversity and Gender Equality Project Group of SGAC) started a series on the 2021 ESA astronaut recruitment campaign\, in order to encourage more women to apply but also to highlight the importance of greater diversity in the next generation of astronaut crews. In addition\, the unique ESA parastronaut selection campaign was brought forward. The three episodes held in 2021 were “Why do we need more women astronauts?”\, “Tips to prepare your application” and “One of them to be the next generation of astronauts?”. \nOne year after these 3 episodes\, the Diversity and Gender Equality Project Group of SGAC is launching a fourth episode to invite astronaut candidates (no longer in the run) to share their experience\, anecdotes and lessons learned with us. The audience will have the opportunity to hear their feedback on the overall selection process (in the limit of what they are allowed to say)\, and ask questions to real-life past astronaut candidates! \nThis webinar “They were ESA astronaut candidates for one year!”\, will be held July 20th 2022 on space exploration day! Come meet adventurous previous astronaut candidate Laura Jourdan\, and fearless previous parastronaut candidate Neil Hopper! \n  \nRegister Now !Speakers: \n  \n  \n \n  \nNeil Hopper \nNeil Hopper is a 46 year old Vascular Surgeon working at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro\, UK\, married to Rachel (a Matron in Cancer Services). Neil and Rachel have 2 children. Neil would describe himself as a space and sci-fi nerd\, he enjoys electronics as a hobby and also messes around with 3D printers. \nNeil Hopper graduated top of his year from the University of Wales College of Medicine in 2000 and also has a degree in Anatomical Sciences and a Doctorate in Research Medicine. The majority of his postgraduate training was in Wales. In 2011\, Neil undertook a year long fellowship in St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney. He returned to Wales and then in 2013  was appointed as a consultant at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro. \nIn April 2019\, Neil became unwell with sepsis and lost both legs below the knee. He returned to part-time work in October 2019 and resumed full duties with full on-call in February 2020. Since his return\, Neil also became a clinical lecturer in Anatomy for the University of Exeter. \nNeil found being on the other side of the knife difficult but that it has also afforded him new opportunities. In 2020\, Neil applied to the ESA Parastronaut programme – to try and fulfill a lifelong dream of training as an astronaut. Along the way\, he was able to communicate about his unique journey on social media. In the future\, he would like to contribute to research on prosthetics – “One day they will not just remedy a deficit but add new and enhanced functionality!”\, he says \nLaura Jourdan \nLaura Jourdan is a French polar explorer. Educated as a biologist\, she caught the polar virus on Svalbard in 2016. Fascinated by the extreme conditions of the Norwegian Arctic archipelago\, she decides to stay there to study polar guiding. \nFirst employed as a logistics facilitator for The University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) in a remote settlement where she lives in harsh polar conditions aside of society for several months\, she then trains to work at sea and embarks as a crew member and guide on board small ships around Svalbard and Northern Norway. Little by little\, she builds her experience\, becomes a professional polar expedition guide and embarks for further destinations such as Greenland\, Northern Canada and Antarctica. \nIn 2020\, while the covid crisis freezes the expedition cruise industry\, Laura is forced to stay on land and decides to explore the area she lives in. She passes her diving levels including rebreather diving\, and takes flying lessons. In February 2020\, when the European Space Agency announced the recruitment of its new generation of astronauts\, she applied with excitement and was selected for the first step of the recruitment process (cognitive and psychological tests). \nIn 2021\, Laura is selected to be part of the expedition team on board Ponant’s brand-new polar exploration ship Le Commandant Charcot for its first year in operation. After sharing the ship’s inaugural trip to the North Pole in September 2021\, she and her team lead challenging expeditions to the most remote areas of the world such as the Weddell and Ross seas or Northeast Greenland. \nToday\, Laura continues to explore and share her passion for the polar regions. With the development of the space industry\, she still dreams that one day she could be a part of the next great human adventure. \nModerator: \nTania Gres \nTania Gres is a young aerospace system engineer working in Thales Alenia Space in Turin (Italy) on challenging space exploration missions to Venus and Low Earth Orbit. Born in Germany and raised in France\, from a family of artists and engineers\, today she fulfills her dreams of working in the European space industry. As an engineer by day\, and as a SGAC volunteer at night. Within the association\, she is one of the 2 current National Point of Contact for France. She was the SG[France]2021 event manager and is the leader of the DIVINAS long term project of the Diversity and Gender Equality Project Group. She was also organizing the first Model UN of SGAC in collaboration with the European Centre for Space Law\, as well as part of the organization for the Space Generation Congress in Paris 2022. Constantly looking for new challenges and opportunities\, she’s a very motivated\, enthusiastic and quick learner who enjoys space related projects\, especially working as a team.

SUMMARY:SG[France] 2022 : Road to Newspace
DESCRIPTION:G \nranted that you’re as passionate about space as we are here as SGAC\, you probably know about the best part of the amazing achievements of space exploration. Gagarin’s first flight\, the Apollo missions\, the ISS or the JWST are all iconic landmarks of the fascinating conquest for outer space that were made possible by the famous\, inspiring and more than often state-owned historic actors that we all know. \nHowever\, the space industry is evolving and that’s happening fast. New actors from the private sector are taking a position in what is now customary called “NewSpace”. Blue Origin\, SpaceX and OneWeb promptly come to mind in this dynamic ecosystem\, but there is also a whole lot of smaller businesses swiftly flourishing in Europe around rocket manufacturing\, constellations and satellite design\, and various other space-based services. \nAt the French chapter of SGAC\, we are convinced that startups and SMEs have a key role in shaping the future of space exploration and exploitation. We hence decided to organize this year’s French Space Generation event around the following discussion: \n\nWhat is the role of business in the future of the space sector and how can we foster space-related entrepreneurship ? \n\n\nS\nG[France] 2022 will take place in Strasbourg in the end of Spring 2022\, if you are a student or young professional aged 18-35\, do not miss this opportunity to meet and chat with renowned experts of the French and European space industry as well as with numerous young space enthusiasts ! \n\nCheck out the event website nowREGISTER NOW !

SUMMARY:SGAC x ECSL Model UN COPUOS
DESCRIPTION:The first treaty to be widely accepted among space actors\, the Outer Space Treaty in 1967\, was pioneering the legal dimension of Space\, by drawing from the Antarctic Treaty\, but also regulating utilization of a new territory: space. This treaty became of the utmost importance as the URSS and the USA fueled heavy tensions in the 60s\, weaponizing outer space. Whilst a total of 5 space treaties were developed and more or less ratified by UN Member States\, none managed to reach consensus since 1984. It is however particularly clear\, as of today\, with the emergence of new industries like space tourism – or the global privatization of space including mining – and the absence of international Law on the matters\, that such regulations shall become a matter of the primary importance in the coming years.\n\n\n\nIn collaboration with the European Center for Space Law\, and with the participation of multiple experts from the United Nations\, SGAC challenges you to live an online Model Session of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space\, as one of the United Nations Member States. As such\, you shall fit within your assigned Nation’s beliefs and political or economical interests\, negotiate with other countries\, and try to shape the future of Space Law!

SUMMARY:SG[India] 2022
DESCRIPTION:S G[India] 2022- the very first edition of SGAC’s flagship local event in India- is happening in an online version this April. SG[India] 2022 is focused on encouraging the use of space for social benefits. The founder of the Indian space program Dr Vikram Sarabhai encouraged harnessing space technologies for social benefits. SG[India] is taking that initiative forward with this significant local event.  \nThe program will consist of keynote speeches and panels\, and a round of discussions\, followed by working group sessions where participants are split into groups and work together on proposed topics guided by subject matter experts from our sponsors and other SGAC teams. \n\nAs we are unable to have an offline event despite our best efforts due to the current 3rd wave of the pandemic\, we will ensure that the audience will have a proactive role in the event! \n\nThe language will be English since the organisers aim to be inclusive and diverse concerning participants and panel experts. \nWorking Groups\n \nWG1 Details\nWG1: Global Partnership in Space Exploration & Innovation\nWe humans always want to touch every inch of the universe. States and space agencies have been engaged in space exploration by one way or another since our first launch. Nowadays focus is shifted to robotic missions beyond our earth and solar system. So\, How can we do it collaboratively? How can a global partnership develop to have futuristic space exploration missions? What are challenges ahead of it and how to overcome them? This working group targets a start of a chain to have sustainable global partnership for Space Exploration and innovation. \n \nWG2 Details\nWG2: Strengthened Space Cooperation in Global Health\nSG[India] is themed to harness space technologies for social benefits. Past two years were so much difficult for the world due to the health system crisis. UNOOSA also has it in one of their thematic priorities to strengthen the global health system using space. This working group entails discussion about how space can be an important factor to strengthen the global health ecosystem. \n \nWG3 Details\nWG3: Global space governance: Current and Future Perspectives\nWe still don’t have any remarkable intergovernmental level space governance. What should be the code of conduct\, confidence building measures\, safety concepts and regulations for a global space system? How can we take initiative for this? What are the challenges? How can we establish standards and regulations related to it? This working group takes a small leap towards knocking the doors of the global space system to have a proper foundation of Global space governance.  \n \nWG4 Details\nWG4: Diversity and Equality in the Space Industry: Challenges and Possible Solutions\nOnly around 1 in 5 space industry workers are women\, roughly the same proportion as 30 years ago. Only 11% of astronauts to date have been women. What gives rise to this difference? Why are conditions still almost the same as they were decades ago? With this working group\, the delegates will first attempt to understand the underlying causes of bias in the space sector and its impact\, both immediate and long-term. They will study the current solutions in place to tackle this\, how effective they have been and will then brainstorm possible challenges and solutions on how to eliminate bias and harassment in the workplace while fostering an era of gender equality and diversity in the aerospace industry. \n \nWG5 Details\nWG5: International Cooperation to Mitigate the Threat of Space Debris\nSpace debris has been a topic of intense debates and discussions over the past years\, yet the threat it poses becomes more real with every passing day. It is estimated that there are around 200\,000 pieces sized between 0.4 and 4 inches\, and millions of pieces smaller than 1cm. With over 3200 defunct satellites already in orbit\, this kind of debris can lead to catastrophic consequences and the loss of potentially critical services. In this working group\, the delegates will discuss how international regulation in this domain can shape the future of space and what kind of policies can be put into place to regulate space launches in a way that will help minimise new space debris. They will also analyse what kind of initiatives and markets can be created on a global scale to mitigate existing debris and how that will impact the space economy as a whole. \n \nWG6 Details\nWG6: Space4SDGs: Space Technology for Tackling Climate Change\nClimate change over the next few decades will define the future of our planet and human civilization. We have already seen unprecedented global disasters which can directly be linked to the result of global warming. Space technology\, in the form of earth observation satellites and remote sensing\, has already increased scientists’ understanding of climate change and subsequent disaster management by leaps and bounds. Delegates of this working group will discuss the actions being taken currently by different space agencies across the world to assist with the Sustainable Development Goals put forward by the United Nations. They will aim to determine how space technology can be further used to mitigate the consequences of climate change and what challenges need to be overcome to limit global temperature rise to well below 2 degrees centigrade. \nClick on the button below to download SG[India] Information Kit \nDOWNLOAD KITKeynote Speakers\, Panelists\, SME’s and Moderators \nDetailsScheduleSchedule\n  \nAll times are in Indian Standard Time (GMT+5:30)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTime\n\n\nSchedule*\n\n\n\n\n9:00 – 10:00\n\n\nInaugural Speech by Shri S. SUMMARY:Introduction to SGAC Mentoring Program and Students Doing Science Communication
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to SGAC Mentoring Program: \nIn this part\, we will provide a quick introduction to SGAC\, the mentoring program and how the matching process will be executed. \nStudents Doing Sci Comm:\nThis webinar features student science communicators within the space field. Their experiences and journeys will be shared\, encouraging students and young professionals to create their own platforms. We will tackle student-specific topics and discuss how to share your knowledge while still in the midst of your studies. \nREGISTER HEREConfirmed speakers: \nJasmine Singh \nJasmine Singh is a senior double majoring in Planetary Science and Atmospheric Science. Ever since she was little\, she has had a passion for space and space travel. Jasmine believes humanity’s curiosity is what drives us to explore unknown worlds in and out of our solar system. In our species’ insatiable hunger for answers within our universe\, She believes that one of the most intriguing of those questions is about other planets’ atmospheres\, which will help us in the search for signs of extraterrestrial life. She interned at NASA Goddard this past summer\, working on an exoplanet climate model emulator\, focusing on factors that influence exoplanet habitability. Jasmine is currently applying to grad school to obtain a PhD in Planetary Science. \nTheodora Girgis \nTheodora (Theo) is a third-year student at the University of Toronto majoring in Aerospace Engineering and minoring in Business. Theo is also the lead and one of the hosts on the University of Toronto Aerospace Team’s (UTAT) new podcast project titled “The Sound of Space” (available on all major audio streaming platforms). She is always looking forward to keeping up with what’s going in the aerospace community\, have interesting conversations\, and learn from other people’s experiences and perspectives! \nDr. Gavin Tolometti \nDr. Gavin Tolometti is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Western Ontario with a research focus on lunar surface processes and planetary remote sensing analysis. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Geology at the University of St Andrews in Scotland in 2016 and his PhD in Earth and Planetary Science at the University of Western Ontario in 2021. Working with the Institute for Earth and Space Exploration and international collaborators\, Gavin seeks to further our understanding of the harsh environment in the lunar poles\, and learn how impact cratering and volcanism has modified the surfaces of planetary bodies in our Solar System. In addition to his research\, Gavin is an advocate for science communication through his podcast platform called the Diaries of Space Explorers\, where he aims to bridge the gap between the space sector and the public. Seeing how the space sector is slowly becoming a more diverse industry\, Gavin wants to help make it stronger and more inclusive by reaching out to incredible people in the space sector and sharing their stories with the world.
