You will be able to engage with them in the chat and ask your questions.  \nThis episode will feature women from the Middle East region. \nUse #AskDGE to ask all your questions before\, during and after the Panel on social media. \nREGISTER NOWSpeakers: \nSahba El-Shawa \n\n\n\n\nSahba El-Shawa is a Jordanian-Canadian space engineer originally from Palestine. She is the founder of the Jordan Space Research Initiative and holds several roles in the SGAC\, including NPoC for Jordan\, as well as co-lead of the Ethics & Human Rights project group and the Space for Climate Action policy working group. She is also a national lead in the Participation of Emerging Space Countries program of the Moon Village Association. Sahba holds a BASc in Mechanical Engineering\, an MSc in Space Studies\, and is currently pursuing her PhD in Sustainable Development and Climate Change. During her studies\, she collaborated with the German Aerospace Centre on robotics research and completed an internship at the European Space Agency’s Clean Space initiative which focused on the environmental impacts of space activities\, both on Earth and in space. Sahba is a vocal advocate for decoupling defense and space. She is committed to creating opportunities for underrepresented communities and helping guide the industry towards a more equitable\, ethical\, and sustainable future. \n\n\n\n\nHoda Awny El-Megharbel \n\n\n\n\nHoda Awny El-Megharbel is an Engineer in the Satellite Communication and Navigation Department in the Egyptian Space Agency. She graduated from Kyushu Institute of Technology / Laboratory of Lean Satellite Enterprises and In-Orbit Experiments (LaSEINE) with a Master’s Degree as part of the United Nations/Japan Long-term Fellowship Programme Post-graduate study on Nano-Satellite Technologies (PNST) in 2020. She has a bachelor’s in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Misr International University\, Egypt. She is also a lecturer on Space Tech\, Africa Regional Coordinator for Africa within the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) and UNOOSA Space 4Women Mentor \nChidimma Oruche \n\n\n\n\nChidimma\, an alumnus of International Space University\, is a Space Enthusiast who likes to use her skills as a Marketing Communication Specialist to help organisations like the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) communicate effectively. As a Social Media Strategist\, she helps build influence for great brand perception and strong online presence. \nHer passion for space studies can be tracked to her internship days at the Strategic Space Application unit of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA)\, the National Space Agency of Nigeria. She is interested in seeing a safer world and hence engages in addressing climate change\, global warming\, air and water pollution and environmental sustainability and helping out with proper objects recycling and waste disposal. \nCurrently the evaluation and assessment officer at Nigeria’s federal government agency\, Chidimma enjoys the dynamic nature of space studies. Chidimma plans to fulfil her career goal of becoming a SPACE DIPLOMAT. \n\n\n\n\nModerator: \nEden Abeselom \n\n\n\n\nHabteslasie\, Eden Abeselom is a graduating student with a Bachelor of Electrical and Computer Engineering with industrial control stream (Honor) at the Debre Berhan University\, Ethiopia. She is an Assistant Researcher in the Department of Aerospace Engineering Research and Development Directorate at the Ethiopian Space Science and Technology Institute. She’s a coordinator at the Ethio Space Kids Club (ESKC) program and a program coordinator in the Women in Space and Engineering (WiSE) project. She’s received recognition certificates for training Ethio Space Kids Club (ESKC) members and for her contribution to the first-ever Ethiopian Remote Sensing Satellite.

She is also a space educator and aspiring astronaut\, and SGAC NPoC for Pakistan. Yumna has been working to promote astronomy and space technology in Pakistan since 2016. Yumna founded Exploration which is a space education-based social enterprise. She believes every kid should get answers to their space imaginations which they usually don’t get in their classrooms. For that purpose\, she is working in affiliation with various international space organizations. She has been appointed as National Outreach Coordinator of Pakistan for The Organization for the Proliferation of Space Studies. Yumna Majeed graduated from Allama Iqbal Medical College in Lahore\, Pakistan. \nDr. Shreya Santra \nDr. Shreya Santra is currently an Assistant Professor in Space Robotics at Tohoku University\, Japan. She pursued her Ph.D. at the Space Robotics Lab (SRL) in Tohoku University as a Japanese government MEXT scholar. Her Ph.D. thesis was focused on Swarm coordination for planetary surface exploration in collaboration with DLR Institute of Communications and Navigation\, Germany. Her interests and specialization include micro-rovers and small satellites for space exploration. She holds a Btech in Electrical Electronics Engineering from NIT\, Jamshedpur\, India\, and Masters in Space Studies from the International Space University\, France. She completed her M.Sc in Space and Engineering Systems at the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology\, Moscow\, Russia\, where she worked on high-altitude balloons\, industrial robots\, and small satellite constellations. She has several internship experiences at institutes like Indian Institute of Astrophysics and Physical Research Laboratory in India. She continues to work on various projects related to the optimization of space missions and has vast experience working with international teams to develop and design space systems. She is an active member of the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) and has been recognized for her contribution towards space outreach and SGAC activities around the globe. She is the Co-founder and Director of Space Technology at Spaceonova (a space education and research company in India) and Director of Outreach for Spaceport SARABHAI (India’s first space policy thinktank). \n\n\n\n\nKhushi Shah \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKhushi Shah is a senior year Mechanical engineering Undergraduate student based in Mumbai\, India. She has participated in numerous National and International Aero design competitions with her University team. She has worked on several projects related to aerospace structures\, mission design\, and spacecraft propulsion. At SGAC\, she is a member of the ACHIEVED Mission Design Team under the Space Exploration Project Group and Communications & Outreach Team at the Diversity & Gender Equality Project Group. She has also been involved with the Women of Aeronautics and Astronautics India and Space to Reflect\, an outreach initiative for creating a diverse and inclusive community for underrepresented minorities in the space sector. DESCRIPTION:The first treaty to be widely accepted among space actors\, the Outer Space Treaty in 1967\, was pioneering the legal dimension of Space\, by drawing from the Antarctic Treaty\, but also regulating utilization of a new territory: space. This treaty became of the utmost importance as the URSS and the USA fueled heavy tensions in the 60s\, weaponizing outer space. Whilst a total of 5 space treaties were developed and more or less ratified by UN Member States\, none managed to reach consensus since 1984. It is however particularly clear\, as of today\, with the emergence of new industries like space tourism – or the global privatization of space including mining – and the absence of international Law on the matters\, that such regulations shall become a matter of the primary importance in the coming years.\n\n\n\nIn collaboration with the European Center for Space Law\, and with the participation of multiple experts from the United Nations\, SGAC challenges you to live an online Model Session of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space\, as one of the United Nations Member States. She is currently the National Point of Contact for Nicaragua and general coordinator of the Open Course Introduction to Space Engineering. Roxy received the SGAC Pioneer Award 2021 for her contributions in SGAC and the space sector. She was also selected as a student Scholar for the Grace Hopper Celebration\, the largest gathering of women in computing. Currently she is working as a lead of the Command & Data Handling and Comms subsystems on a Mercury Sample Return Mission Design for the SGAC Space Exploration Project Group. Roxy is the president of the Society of Women in Space Exploration Costa Rica. She is a young female passionate about space\, who is driven by diversity and inclusion and who strongly promotes space education in her homeland Nicaragua.  \nRoxy has worked on a CubeSat design with the Brazilian National Institution of Space Research – INPE\, she worked on the design of a Lunar Hospital using Lava tubes during her virtual Analog Astronaut training. She recently co-designed\, supervised and produced a web app solution to determine the safest and most suitable sites for shelters for the Caribbean coast in Nicaragua. The team used Sentinel-1\, elevation and land cover derived from FAO’s SEPAL cloud platform and Google Earth Engine to derive low\, medium and high shelter suitability. \nMabony Sanchez is studying a master’s degree in Physical Sciences at (UTP)- Technological University of Panama. She is currently the National Point of Contact of Panama in SGAC and is also a member of the National Committee of Astronomy Teaching (NAEC)\, Mabony herself is a high school Physics teacher. Through SGAC and NAEC\, she has had the opportunity to work on teaching and disseminating astronomy in schools and space sciences\, such as the use of CanSat as a pedagogical tool\, cooperation with the Panamanian Space Science Olympics\, participation in events of 100 hours of astronomy of the IAU\, Jury of Space Apps Challenge in Panama\, advisor in the competition of CanSat with the National Institute of Space Research of Brazil – INPE. \nShe recently was selected by the National Secretariat of Science and Technology as a researcher and is working on the development of electrodes created from biomass for sodium ion batteries. Mabony is passionate about Physical Sciences\, Space Sciences and Renewable Energies and the great benefits they provide to society. \n

DESCRIPTION:S G[India] 2022- the very first edition of SGAC’s flagship local event in India- is happening in an online version this April. SG[India] 2022 is focused on encouraging the use of space for social benefits. The founder of the Indian space program Dr Vikram Sarabhai encouraged harnessing space technologies for social benefits. SG[India] is taking that initiative forward with this significant local event.  \nThe program will consist of keynote speeches and panels\, and a round of discussions\, followed by working group sessions where participants are split into groups and work together on proposed topics guided by subject matter experts from our sponsors and other SGAC teams. \n\nAs we are unable to have an offline event despite our best efforts due to the current 3rd wave of the pandemic\, we will ensure that the audience will have a proactive role in the event! \n\nThe language will be English since the organisers aim to be inclusive and diverse concerning participants and panel experts. \nWorking Groups\n \nWG1 Details\nWG1: Global Partnership in Space Exploration & Innovation\nWe humans always want to touch every inch of the universe. States and space agencies have been engaged in space exploration by one way or another since our first launch. Nowadays focus is shifted to robotic missions beyond our earth and solar system. So\, How can we do it collaboratively? How can a global partnership develop to have futuristic space exploration missions? What are challenges ahead of it and how to overcome them? This working group targets a start of a chain to have sustainable global partnership for Space Exploration and innovation. \n \nWG2 Details\nWG2: Strengthened Space Cooperation in Global Health\nSG[India] is themed to harness space technologies for social benefits. Past two years were so much difficult for the world due to the health system crisis. UNOOSA also has it in one of their thematic priorities to strengthen the global health system using space. This working group entails discussion about how space can be an important factor to strengthen the global health ecosystem. \n \nWG3 Details\nWG3: Global space governance: Current and Future Perspectives\nWe still don’t have any remarkable intergovernmental level space governance. What should be the code of conduct\, confidence building measures\, safety concepts and regulations for a global space system? How can we take initiative for this? What are the challenges? How can we establish standards and regulations related to it? This working group takes a small leap towards knocking the doors of the global space system to have a proper foundation of Global space governance.  \n \nWG4 Details\nWG4: Diversity and Equality in the Space Industry: Challenges and Possible Solutions\nOnly around 1 in 5 space industry workers are women\, roughly the same proportion as 30 years ago. Only 11% of astronauts to date have been women. What gives rise to this difference? Why are conditions still almost the same as they were decades ago? With this working group\, the delegates will first attempt to understand the underlying causes of bias in the space sector and its impact\, both immediate and long-term. They will study the current solutions in place to tackle this\, how effective they have been and will then brainstorm possible challenges and solutions on how to eliminate bias and harassment in the workplace while fostering an era of gender equality and diversity in the aerospace industry. \n \nWG5 Details\nWG5: International Cooperation to Mitigate the Threat of Space Debris\nSpace debris has been a topic of intense debates and discussions over the past years\, yet the threat it poses becomes more real with every passing day. It is estimated that there are around 200\,000 pieces sized between 0.4 and 4 inches\, and millions of pieces smaller than 1cm. With over 3200 defunct satellites already in orbit\, this kind of debris can lead to catastrophic consequences and the loss of potentially critical services. In this working group\, the delegates will discuss how international regulation in this domain can shape the future of space and what kind of policies can be put into place to regulate space launches in a way that will help minimise new space debris. They will also analyse what kind of initiatives and markets can be created on a global scale to mitigate existing debris and how that will impact the space economy as a whole. \n \nWG6 Details\nWG6: Space4SDGs: Space Technology for Tackling Climate Change\nClimate change over the next few decades will define the future of our planet and human civilization. We have already seen unprecedented global disasters which can directly be linked to the result of global warming. Space technology\, in the form of earth observation satellites and remote sensing\, has already increased scientists’ understanding of climate change and subsequent disaster management by leaps and bounds. She currently works as a Space Strategy Consultant of the multinational company PwC\, where she actively participates in projects that support both the public and private sectors in decision-making\, the development of space policies and the performance of economic impact assessments. \nPreviously\, Victoria worked for the European Space Agency at its Foreign Office in Washington D.C. There she analyzed the developments of the main space actors and worked to strengthen the links between the European Space Agency\, NASA and other actors in the aerospace sector. Victoria completed her MSc at University College London where\, in association with the Mullard Space Science Laboratory\, she investigated the erratic X-ray auroras on Jupiter. Opening up opportunities in science and technology\, particularly for women\, is something Victoria is passionate about. To this end\, she has worked as an academic mentor internationally\, sharing her passion for space and teaching interactive courses to motivate and inspire the next generation of space scientists and engineers. \n  \nIsi Casas del Valle \nIsi Casas del Valle is a Chilean astropreneur. She holds a bachelor’s in laws (summa cum laude) from Universidad de los Andes (Chile)\, where she specialized in comparative law and legal English\, and minored in basic sciences. With a keen interest in air and space\, she worked as an air attorney for a boutique law firm in Chile whilst undergoing a postgraduate degree in Air and Space Law in UDIMA & the Instituto Iberoamericano de Derecho Aeronáutico y del Espacio y de la Aviación Comercial in Spain.  She was awarded the Secure World Foundation’s Ray Williamson Future Fund Scholarship to attend the Southern Hemisphere Space Studies Program of the International Space University hosted in Adelaide\, Australia; and presented the paper resulting from the program at the International Aeronautical Congress (IAC) in Bremen\, supported by Secure World Foundation’s IAC Young Professionals Scholarship. Moreover\, she was also one of the awardees of the Emerging Space Leader Award of the International Astronautical Federation (IAF)\, to attend the IAC in Dubai. \n  \nRoxy Williams \nRoxy Williams is NPOC of Nicaragua in SGAC and is the president of the Society of Women in Space Exploration CR. She worked on a CubeSat design with INPE. She was a GHC Student Scholar participating in the largest gathering of women in computing. She co-design an app to determine the most suitable sites for shelters in the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua; Sentinel-1\, elevation and land cover derived from FAO’s SEPAL cloud platform and Google Earth Engine was used to derive low\, medium and high shelter suitability. Currently Roxy is working as the lead of CDH and Comms subsystems on a Mercury Sample Return Mission design with the SEPG.

In 2015\, she left St Lucia to pursue an Integrated Masters degree in Astrophysics in the UK. Cheyenne’s passion for Space came full circle back to her home island when was appointed as St Lucia’s first National Point of Contact (NPoC) in the Space Generation Advisory Council. Her efforts as NPoC led to co-founding St Lucia’s first national Astronomy Association (LUNAA) to provide an avenue for Space and Science enthusiasts to connect. In her capacity as President of LUNAA\, she is also continuing her SGAC mission to raise awareness of the benefits of Space technology to St Lucia and the rest of the Caribbean region.Day-to-day\, Cheyenne is using her love for numbers and problem solving in the Finance Technology industry as an Analytics Specialist. Outside of work\, she is still very active in the space community as an international speaker\, mentor and science communicator. This dedication stems from a wider career goal of increasing gender and ethnic diversity in Science\, Technology\, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields\, especially Physics. \n  \nMariam Naseem\n \nMariam is currently working with the Industry Relations team at the Canadian Space Agency. She is also a Visiting Scholar at the Blue Marble Space Institute of Science and a research collaborator on Ocean Worlds science with a scientist at NASA Goddard. She has a BSc. in Electrical Engineering from UT Austin and an MBA from the University of Toronto. Mariam brings a global and multi-disciplinary background to the space sector\, having worked as a commercial space consultant\, as a technology strategist in the Enterprise Innovation team at one of the largest banks in Canada\, as a field engineer on an oil rig in Russia\, a manufacturing engineer in a Product Development center in Texas and as a business development manager for a Toronto-based Quantum computing startup. She serves as National Point of Contact for Canada and as a Mentorship Committee member at the Space Generation Advisory Council\, as coordinator for the Next Generation Plenary at the International Astronautical Federation’s Workforce Development and Young Professionals Programme Committee and as a SEDS-Canada Advisory Board member. \n  \nSapna Rao\n \nSapna Rao is a Systems Engineer at Lockheed Martin Commercial Civil Space. She has worked on human space exploration missions ranging from the Artemis missions to cryogenic demonstration missions. Her focuses are on Systems Architecture and applying Machine Learning to space missions. Additionally\, she is passionate about Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion and is an active member in Lockheed Martin’s Women’s Impact Network where she organizes professional development events for women and minorities. She is also working with the Space Frontier Foundation to create a Diversity Equity and Inclusion toolkit to aid organizations and conferences. She prioritizes STEM outreach and is an advocate for minority representation in engineering. DESCRIPTION:Held annually at the scenic Broadmoor Resort in Colorado Springs\, Colorado\, U.S.A.\, in conjunction with the Space Symposium\, the Space Generation Fusion Forum (SGFF) is a multi-day\, high-intensity\, fast-paced professional development and networking event focused on the global space industry. Students and young professionals from around the world\, who are working and participating in all facets of the space community\, apply to attend SGFF each year. \nThrough breakout sessions\, expert panels\, keynote presentations\, and speed networking\, SGFF delegates will “fuse” their unique perspectives and backgrounds to formulate solutions to global problems of interest and importance to the space community. By attending SGFF\, delegates will learn from each other and from experts\, share their knowledge\, network with fellow students and young professionals in the space industry\, and meet international leaders in the space field.  \nAll output and content produced by the discussions held during the Space Generation Fusion Forum are compiled into a report for the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space. Jasmine is currently applying to grad school to obtain a PhD in Planetary Science. \nTheodora Girgis \nTheodora (Theo) is a third-year student at the University of Toronto majoring in Aerospace Engineering and minoring in Business. Theo is also the lead and one of the hosts on the University of Toronto Aerospace Team’s (UTAT) new podcast project titled “The Sound of Space” (available on all major audio streaming platforms). She is always looking forward to keeping up with what’s going in the aerospace community\, have interesting conversations\, and learn from other people’s experiences and perspectives! \nDr. Gavin Tolometti \nDr. Gavin Tolometti is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Western Ontario with a research focus on lunar surface processes and planetary remote sensing analysis. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Geology at the University of St Andrews in Scotland in 2016 and his PhD in Earth and Planetary Science at the University of Western Ontario in 2021. Working with the Institute for Earth and Space Exploration and international collaborators\, Gavin seeks to further our understanding of the harsh environment in the lunar poles\, and learn how impact cratering and volcanism has modified the surfaces of planetary bodies in our Solar System. In addition to his research\, Gavin is an advocate for science communication through his podcast platform called the Diaries of Space Explorers\, where he aims to bridge the gap between the space sector and the public. Seeing how the space sector is slowly becoming a more diverse industry\, Gavin wants to help make it stronger and more inclusive by reaching out to incredible people in the space sector and sharing their stories with the world.

DESCRIPTION:What do we learn from genetics & oncology research in space? How can this knowledge ultimately improve our life on Earth? \nThe Speakers : \nDr. Francine Garrett-Bakelman \nDr. Francine Garrett-Bakelman is an Assistant Professor in Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics at the University of Virginia (Charlottesville\, USA). Francine completed her undergraduate studies in Biochemistry and Cell Biology at the California State University (Fullerton\, USA) and then continued on to study medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (Yeshiva University\, New York\, USA)\, where she attained her MD/PhD. Afterwards\, Francine completed a postdoctoral training and then a clinical fellowship at the Weill Cornel Medical College specialising in epigenetics\, hematology and oncology. Besides growing her expertise in Medicine and Life Sciences field\, Francine worked closely with NASA on the famous “twin study”\, where one of the twin astronauts spent a year-long mission on the International Space Station. Therefore\, Dr Garrett-Bakelman and her colleagues were able to examine molecular and physiological traits of astronauts that may be affected by prolonged time in space. \nDr. Tricia Larose \nDr. Tricia Larose is the Principal Investigator for “Tumors in Space” with the University of Oslo\, Norway. Her cancer research project has been selected by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs and the China Manned Space Agency for a 31-day space mission on board the China Space Station to be launched in 2025. Beyond her academic work\, Tricia works as a Medical Advisor at the Institute of Aviation Medicine (Norwegian Armed Forces Medical Services) and as an adjunct lecturer at the International Space University. Discussions will centre around the benefits of and reasons for doing science communication\, challenges they have faced and any advice for newcomers.\nThe Speakers \nGraham Lau \n\nDr. Graham Lau is an astrobiologist and communicator of science. With an academic background spanning biology\, chemistry\, astrophysics\, and geology\, Dr. Lau is an expert on how living things affect the environment around them and how we search for alien life beyond the Earth. He serves as the Director of Communications and Marketing for Blue Marble Space\, as a Research Scientist with the Blue Marble Space Institute of Science\, as the Director of Logistics for the University Rover Challenge\, and as the Host of the NASA-funded show “Ask an Astrobiologist”. Dr. Lau also serves as a meditation instructor and public speaking coach. \n\n\nTrevor Kjorlien\n\n\nTrevor Kjorlien is a Space Educator in Montréal. In 2018\, he began Plateau Astro which teaches about space\, astronomy\, and what we can see in light-polluted areas like Montréal. Trevor tries to use humour and storytelling to get people interested in the sky around them. \n\nPaul Byrne \nByrne received his B.A. in geology\, and Ph.D. in planetary geology\, from Trinity College Dublin\, Ireland. He was a MESSENGER postdoctoral fellow at the Earth and Planets Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington\, DC\, and an LPI postdoctoral fellow at the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston\, Texas. He is an Associate Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis; before coming to WashU\, he taught as an assistant and then associate professor at North Carolina State University. His research focuses on comparative planetary geology—comparing and contrasting the surfaces and interiors of planetary bodies\, including Earth\, to understand geological phenomena at the systems level. Byrne’s research projects span the solar system from Mercury to Pluto and\, increasingly\, to the study of extrasolar planets. He uses remotely sensed data\, numerical and physical models\, and fieldwork in analog settings on Earth to understand why planets look the way they do. \nRegister Now !

Seconded to the Prime Minister’s Department in 1990 to set up and head the Planetarium Division\, which subsequently became the Space Science Studies Division in 1993. Appointed by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia as Professor of Astrophysics in 1994. She has had years of experience working both in academia and industry\, in laboratory and field\, and in basic and applied research. \nShe is currently one of the National Point of Contacts of the Philippines for Space Generation Advisory Council. Being exposed to the fashion and furniture industry at a young age influenced her to be passionate in promoting sustainability and preserving culture in the future of arts\, especially the future of fashion in space. \nJuliah Sinpanich Champion\, Founder and Art Director\, MANRVA \nJuliah Sinpanich Champion is an entrepreneur and businesswoman. She is the founder and art director at MANRVA\, a company that was founded to bridge the gap between Art and Science. After obtaining a B.A. in fashion design from Accademia Italiana in 2017\, Juliah has developed an interest in becoming a Science visualizer. She later expanded her design knowledge beyond clothing into 3D digital design. DESCRIPTION:To celebrate World Space Week\, the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) Nicaragua community in collaboration with SWISE CR have come up with a series of webinars to touch on important regional\, global and experiences within the space sector. For each webinar\, we will have one speaker presenting a specific topic related to space and also which applies to the situation and region they are based on. \nEach webinar will have Q&A sessions for you to learn more about the topic that is being discussed. Join us and learn more about space topics.  \n  \n Angel Arcia \nMr. Angel Arcia Gil is the SGAC NCAC Regional Coordinator\, and founder of the Open-Course Intro to Space Engineering for students in Panama and Central America. He is currently a Professor at University Santa Maria la Antigua in Panama\, where he teaches courses of Telecommunications and Electronics.
