SUMMARY:[PG-SMLS] Health in Space Series: Food for Space
DESCRIPTION:How does astronaut food influence space exploration? What do we bring aboard for healthy next generation space missions?\nWelcome to our webinar series on Health in Space: showing how space exploration is advancing and benefitting health(care) on Earth. Our speakers include experts in the field of space medicine and space life sciences\, former or current astronauts\, flight surgeons. These webinars are open to all to participate and offer an opportunity to engage with exciting speakers. The series is organized by the Space Generation Advisory Council project group Space Medicine and Life Sciences. We hope you learn a ton!\nOur seventh episode will focus on food for health in space. We discuss the impact of nutrition to human space exploration and will tackle topics like off-world plant production\, the value of nutritional science for astronaut health and the latest research projects (and opportunities). So\, lots of food for thought. Or food for space…\nAt the end of the session\, your questions will be answered by this stellar panel! \nThis session will be moderated by Jules Lancee\, healthcare innovator here on Earth. \n  \nREGISTER HERE  \nOur line-up of this episode includes: \nChristina Valagkouti \nChristina-Ariadni completed a BSc in Nutrition and Dietetics Science from Harokopio University of Athens and is now enrolled in Wageningen University and Research\, in the 2nd year of her MSc specialization on Molecular Nutrition & Toxicology. Her vision of an effective space health system led her to the creation of SMLS’s “Space Nutrition” sub-group\, that aims to offer learning opportunities and inspiration to nutrition scientists\, and to demonstrate the potential of nutrition science to mitigate common health issues of not only astronauts\, but also the general population. \nBenjamin Greaves \nBen attended the University of Michigan and received a Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering and a Masters in Space Engineering. However\, in recent years\, through volunteering at local food pantries\, interning at NASA to work on their advanced food production\, and serving as a US Peace Corps Agricultural Volunteer in The Gambia\, the importance of food security and food equity has become his passion. Now with Orbital Farm\, Ben is developing off-Earth plant growth technologies and working towards food accessibility here on Earth.

SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:Airbus and SGAC invite you to join the discussion on sustainable space with a decidedly Spanish flavour.  \nIn the lead-up to the 5th European Space Generation Workshop\, this webinar will feature two Airbus experts presenting an overview of Airbus activities in Spain and a glimpse of the ways in Airbus is bringing its experience to bear in protecting our planet for many launches to come.   \nJoin the conversation and ask your questions about cool projects\, crazy ideas\, and creative solutions to the critical challenges of our times. \nSchedule: \n2 speakers (15 min each) + Q&A (15 min)  \n15′ – Keynote 1: Airbus space activities in Spain (Mar) \n15′ – Keynote 2: Space in support of sustainability (Blanca) \n30′ – Moderated Q&A \n  \n  \nREGISTER HERE  \n  \nBlanca Guitard \nBlanca is a mechanical engineer at Airbus Defence and Space in Friedrichshafen (Germany)\, where she has spent the past six years specializing in the structural analysis of optical instruments and highly stable structures. In parallel\, she is pursuing an Executive MBA at the IESE Business School in Munich and looks forward to graduating soon! \nReading Neil Armstrong´s biography as a kid interested Blanca in the space industry from a young age.\nAfter growing up between Connecticut and Madrid\, Blanca completed a degree in industrial engineering at Universidad Pontificia Comillas – ICAI in Madrid. Following her studies\, Blanca joined the European Space Agency as a Young Graduate Trainee at ESTEC´s Test Centre in the Netherlands\, where she spent a year and a half working on mechanical engineering development for ESA. \nJumping from agency to industry\, Blanca tested her entrepreneurial spirit at a small start-up which saw her active in both Portugal and the Netherlands. \nBlanca’s enthusiasm for space and professional experience at ESA\, Airbus and a smaller start-up company has given her a broad understanding of the industry from many different perspectives. Her technical knowledge and business-oriented mindset combine with a sense of responsibility for others to lead Blanca in her quest to explore in-depth how the space industry can contribute to a more sustainable world. \nMar Fernandez \nMarried and with two daughters\, Mar is an Aerospace Engineer with several Master degrees related to Business Administration\, or Technological and Industrial Organization. Mar joined Airbus\, former CASA Espacio\, in 1989\, starting her working career in the Engineering Department.  All through these years\, she has had the chance to work in several departments like Strategy\, Finance\, Program Management and Marketing and Sales.   \nSince 2017 she is Airbus Defence and Space S.A.U.’s Key Account Manager of Space in Spain\, and her job consists of representing the Institutional Customer Voice while collaborating with all the Airbus colleagues that work for the award of value added contracts.  The relation with the Spanish Administration is vital to obtain their support and promote the increase of Spanish Space budgets.

SUMMARY:[PG-SMLS] - Health in Space series: The Space Within
DESCRIPTION:Welcome back to the Health in Space series! In this sixth episode we will turn our attention to ‘the space within’: the human mind. This year\, we celebrate that humans have lived and worked in the extreme environment of space for 20 years straight. For our series on health in space\, it is time to look at the effects of this challenging endeavour on the mental health of astronauts and other professionals working in such harsh or isolated places. \nOver the next decades\, space missions returning to the Moon or even going further to Mars will take longer than a typical stay at the International Space Station. That will probably affect aspects of the human psyche of the astronauts on the go. But what mental effects will be of importance\, when we will travel further away from Earth? \nWe have invited Dr. Iya Whitely and dr. Nathan Smith to join us on a tour through this exciting specialism in space health. What should we learn from the human mind before putting it under the stress of long duration space missions? What do we know from extreme environments on Earth and their habitants mental health? How do we work towards successful and healthy human space flight missions in the future? \n\nDr Iya Whiteley is a Space Psychologist (ESA\, UKSA and IBMP) and the Director of the Centre for Space Medicine\, Mullard Space Science Laboratory\, University College London. She has 25 years of experience in space psychology\, human performance and cognitive system engineering. Besides her background in clinical psychology\, she has expertise in: crew selection & astronaut training\, interface & cockpit design; human-robot interaction and humanoid robot design. Also\, she is a pilot\, skydiver\, PADI Rescue Scuba Diver\, and acupuncturist. Her book “TOOLKIT FOR A SPACE PSYCHOLOGIST”\, was written to support astronauts in exploration missions to the Moon and Mars. Iya was expert and presenter for 6 episodes on the BBC Science show Astronauts: Do You Have What It Takes?\n\n\nDr. Nathan Smith obtained a PhD from the University of Birmingham in Sport and Exercise Psychology\, after which he further specialized in extreme medicine. He developed training and education on psychology in extreme environments. Furthermore\, Nathan has been a research fellow at the University of Manchester studying how humans survive and thrive in extreme environments\, working together closely with ESA and NASA.\n\nOur stellar panel will discuss astronaut psychological health for current and next generation space missions and at the end of the session we will open up the floor for questions. This session will be moderated by your host Jules Lancee\, health innovator on Earth.

SUMMARY:EuRoC\, the first edition of the European Rocketry Challenge that will shape the future of rocketry and space in universities
DESCRIPTION:The European Rocketry Challenge (EuRoC) is the event in which rocketry teams from Europe will\, for the first time\, be able to launch their rockets and showcase their designs in the continent. Yearly editions of EuRoC will not only promote rocketry among universities\, but will also push forward the space sector in Europe\, attracting and maintaining young talent within Europe that will later become leaders of the sector. In this webinar\, we talk with the students that had the vision of EuRoC and realized it in record time\, discussing the challenges of organizing such an event and making it a yearly challenge\, as well as how they brought together more than 40 rocketry teams to take part in the organization and the actual event. \nPierre Groslambert \nStarting the second year of his masters in Robotics at EPFL in Lausanne\, Pierre is also fortunate to be the Chief Technical Officer of the EPFL Rocket Team. Their team is looking into launching its 3rd\, and first hybrid\, rocket at the EuRoC. \nJonas Aannestad \nJonas Aannestad is a 3rd year student of Mechanical Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). He is the Advisor to the Board to Propulse NTNU\, the rocketry team from his university. Earlier\, he was part of the founding team of a start-up\, and the Engine System Lead and Technical Director at Propulse NTNU. \nEliisabet Jahilo \nEliisabet is a masters student at the faculty of Aerospace Engineering at TU Delft. Since her first bachelor year in University\, she has been involved in Delft’s student rocketry society DARE. Her passion is everything to do with propulsion\, but this year she is serving as the president of DARE. \nRasmus Arnt Pedersen \nCurrently on the 2nd last semester of the Master’s in Mechanical Engineering at DTU\, Rasmus has led DanSTAR through the development and testing of three different bi-liquid engines as chair of the board\, project manager\, and mechanical team leader. DanSTAR will be launching its first ever rocket\, Dragonfly\, at EuRoC this year as the only liquid team. \nMarta Gonçalves \nVery early on\, Marta developed a special interest in how things work and a fascination for Space\, which proved to be the ideal combination when entering the Master of Aerospace Engineering. On the other hand\, interest in people and collective well-being has always been present and\, therefore\, it has also been participating in various volunteer activities. \nMotivated by the search for a cross between people\, technology\, space\, science and society\, she worked as a researcher at IN + / IST\, where she studied the impact of technological change in the aerospace sector. Now\, at Portugal Space\, she is the youngest member of the team and is a project manager in the area of science and education. \nAlways with a book at hand\, if you can’t find her at the Agency\, the most likely thing is that Marta is traveling: anywhere in Portugal or the world\, between the pages of a book\, or between pots and wooden spoons … but definitely doing something new. \n  \nREGISTER NOW
