SUMMARY:[Partnered] Returning to the Moon: Implications
DESCRIPTION:Do we know what the implications of returning to the Moon would have on human physiology and psychology? Can medical technology aid us? \nTime: 11:30-14:00 BST/12:30-15:00 CEDT/6.30am-9am EDT \nAbout this Event \nThe last time humankind flew beyond lower Earth orbit and to the Moon was during the Apollo 17 mission\, in 1972. Since then\, as a species we have not returned to the Moon\, despite multi-national interests in setting up lunar bases. NASA’s Artemis programme aims to put “the first woman and the next man” on the Moon by as early as 2024\, with the aim of establishing a presence on the Moon\, and using it as a way of eventually putting humans on Mars. Yet\, the implications of an extended stay on the Moon on human health are yet to be explored in great detail. How would flying and setting up for months or even years at a time effect human physiology and psychology? What risks does this next step in human space exploration pose to our bodies\, and are the risks worth it? \nThis UK Space LABS/SGAC webinar event aims to explore these questions and also provide the opportunity for your questions to be answered by a variety of experts in the field\, who each have experience in space related research\, and will offer fascinating talks on a range of topics\, from remote monitoring of astronaut health\, to the psychology of coping in extreme environments. \n\nDr Jo Bower – Jo is a Lecturer in psychology at University of East Anglia. She completed her postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Houston\, on a NASA funded project investigating risk and resilience of people in isolated and extreme environments. She will be presenting data on emotional and physical symptoms of being in isolated and extreme environments\, including a recent Antarctic winterover study\, which was used as an analogue for long duration space exploration.\nDr Floris Wuyst – Floris is Professor at the University of Antwerp and recently worked with Russian cosmonauts to publish a paper on the effects of spaceflight on functional brain connectivity.\nLauren Church – Lauren is an MSc student studying Space Physiology and Health at King’s College London. As part of the research collective “Paraboladies”\, Lauren has completed research on the pre-flight medical checks required for commercial suborbital spaceflight\, with an accepted abstract for AsMA 2020 on this subject. She will share her insights in how remote monitoring of astronaut health can facilitate a return to the Moon\, as well as long term habituation of the Moon.\nProfessor Simon Evetts: Simon is the Managing Director of SeaSpace Research Ltd\, the R&D arm of Blue Abyss\, and the R&D Director of Blue Abyss. Simon is a Visiting Senior Lecturer at King’s College London\, a Visiting Professor at Northumbria University\, and co-founder of the UK Space Life & Biomedical Sciences Association. Simon will talk about Prof Walter Kuehnegger\, one of the Apollo Program’s Principal Investigators and how his research enable humanity to explore the Moon.\nBjorn Baselt: Bjorn from SCK CEN in Belgium is our last speaker\, and he will be talking about ‘Models for space studies in biology: from cells to animals to humans”.\n\nUK Space LABS: The UK Space Life and Biomedical Sciences Association is an organisation which aims to communication\, cooperation and collaboration between UK based organisations and individuals involved or interested in research\, healthcare\, outreach and educational activities related to space life and biomedical sciences and the human element of human spaceflight. The organisation aims to advance the research and conduct of space life and biomedical sciences in the UK\, benefit terrestrial healthcare\, and prepare the UK to effectively participate in future human spaceflight activities.

As well as giving younger students an opportunity to interact with the wider science community and a platform to discover careers and employability. The hope is that all participants and speakers will come away with new contacts\, new knowledge and a rekindled appreciation of space and society. \nFull Description\nLeicester has been dubbed the future space capital of the UK. With a rich history in space science\, astrophysics and space technology and with future plans of Space Park Leicester\, what better British city could host SGAC’s European Student Forum. \nThe Physics and Space department at the University of Leicester has been continuously involved in space exploration and earth observation missions with NASA and ESA since the 1960’s. Recently\, staff at the University of Leicester has been one of the leading institutes involved in the BepiColombo and Juno mission. \nLeicester also hosts the National Space centre. \nThe ESF will be held on the 19th of September at the University of Leicester. This will be the first time the ESF will be in the UK and Leicester. The event would witness around 60 delegates aged 18-35 from across Europe along with space companies\, academics and space industry representatives. \nThroughout the day\, participants will be able to explore the University’s department of Physics and Astronomy; seeing student projects along the corridors\, satellite replicas in the foyer and the SkyLark sounding rocket from 1955. \nESF features key-note speakers\, panel discussions on careers and Earth’s technological development and intensive working group sessions on the following topics: space debris\, cubesats\, space policy and another to be confirmed. \nThe structure of the day will include a morning of panel discussion and talks given by experts in planetary science\, space engineering\, careers and space policy. The goal of the morning sessions will be to share experiences and views on current technology\, science and key issues. \nFollowing Lunch\, the participants will be split into 4 workshop groups where they will address separate issues within the space sector. What cultural challenges must we address to enable future long term habitation and colonization of space? \nNext Generation Space Research:\nISS and beyond – what’s the next technology leap that will affect the future of space research? What are the key changes or developments needed to get there? Do any current national or international policies need to be adapted? In addition\, as we extend our research to future orbital platforms (lunar and earth orbiting)\, are there new opportunities and technologies to leverage that the ISS does not offer? \nHumans In Space:\nAs we begin to not only send more people to space\, but have them stay for longer periods of time\, what are the challenges we still have to face? Companies are beginning to offer astronaut experiences for short term stays in space. What responsibility do those commercial entities have to the well-being of their customers\, and what kinds of processes and policies need to be put in space to protect both sides? \nEntrepreneurship and Investment:\nWhat are the main qualities of a company that investors look for in a company? Where are the newest companies coming from (universities\, government spin offs\, former specialized employees\, etc)? What have the current trends been in space investment\, and how do current VCs discover and develop their portfolios in the space field? What are key areas that are ripe for investment in the space economy? What kinds of orbital applications could become investment opportunities in the long term (assuming human or technologically developed presence in earth or cis-lunar orbit)? \nAdvancing Towards the Moon:\n50 years ago\, humanity’s first steps were taken on the moon. This track commemorates the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11\, and looks to the future of the lunar endeavors. What would a framework of a collaborative\, sustainable\, and innovative future for Earth’s moon look like? What should our lunar priorities be? With increasingly complex exploration programs on the horizon (Moon\, Mars\, Europa\, DSG\, etc)\, what are some of the upcoming challenges that they will face? \n\n\nOrganizing TeamAlyssa Deardorff (alyssa.deardorff@spacegeneration.org)
