DESCRIPTION:In the NCAC Policy & Advocacy Webinar Series\, we discuss policy topics relevant to the NCAC region with an international lens. For this webinar\, we will discuss the impacts of the space industry on Earth’s climate and pathways to “net zero” emissions and environmentally friendly practices. \n\n\n\nSpeakers \n \n\n\n\n\nElwyn Sirieys: \nis in charge of Sustainability Strategy and Roadmapping at ArianeGroup\, the European leader of space launchers. He earned a Master of Science from the Technology and Policy Program (TPP) and the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at MIT. His past research investigated the environmental impact of space launches and the ensuing societal response. Before joining MIT\, he studied Engineering at Ecole Centrale Paris (France) and Law at Sorbonne University. He has previous experience working in strategy for Dassault Systemes\, Starburst Aerospace\, and UNOOSA. \n\n\n\n\n\n Jordan Sotudeh: \nis a Deputy Program Manager and Senior Technical Lead at BryceTech\, supporting NASA’s Office of Technology Policy and Strategy. There\, we helped design and write the Space Based Solar Power study published on 1/11/2024. He holds a Masters degree in International Science and Technology Policy from George Washington University and Project Management Professional certification. Jordan has supported C-Suite equivalent offices in technology and policy at BryceTech\, NASA\, JPL\, and DoD\, as well as market analysis and strategy to the climate change challenge. Jordan is also the founder and CEO of Venaera\, a cleantech startup. \n\n\n\n\n\nDavid Buckley Biggs: \nis Head of Future Programs at Stoke Space. Stoke Space is a space launch company that is developing 100% reusable launch vehicles. David has previous experiences working at Momentus as Director of Advanced Architectures. Dr. Biggs earned a PhD in Aerospace\, Aeronautical\, and Astronautical Engineering from Stanford University. \n\n\n\n \n\nLindsey Wiser: \nis an astrophysics PhD candidate in Arizona and the Lead of the NCAC Task Force. SUMMARY:Fast and Accurate Probability of Collision Toolkits for Near-Earth and Cislunar Applications
DESCRIPTION:With increasing traffic in near-Earth and Cislunar space\, it has become essential to develop fast and accurate methods of predicting collisions between space objects. This is an important topic of discussion in current Space Situational Awareness (SSA) domain research. Orbit determination methods provide users with a state and an uncertainty associated with an object in space. This tells the user where the spacecraft is and with what percent certainty. Because there are limited observation resources\, it is essential to have the ability to propagate this information to desired times accurately. Generally\, this is accomplished using numerical Monte Carlo methods\, where a point cloud of millions of points is taken from the initial uncertainty and each of these points are propagated to the final time. This is highly accurate with a large number of points but adds to a high computational expense. To minimize this cost\, we look for analytical and semi-analytical methods that are faster but can still reach good statistical accuracy. This seminar will focus on an introduction to SSA\, collision prediction methods\, and the semi-analytical toolkits developed to achieve fast and accurate collision probabilities. The target audience is students and young professionals interested in SSA research and tools. \nSpeaker: Yashica Khatri \n\n\n\nYashica Khatri has just defended her PhD at the University of Colorado Boulder\, focusing in Astrodynamics and Satellite Navigation (ASN). Her research is in Space Situational Awareness (SSA)\, specifically\, developing semi-analytical methods of conjunction analysis to predict the probability of collision with high speed and accuracy. She grew up in India and received her B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott\, Arizona in May 2018. At Embry-Riddle\, Yashica was a part of various honors societies\, diversity and educational organizations\, and the ERAU’s competitive Golden Eagles Flight Team. She also started a Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers (SASE) chapter and assisted in bringing a Delta Phi Epsilon sorority chapter to the Embry-Riddle campus. She completed her M.S. at the University of Colorado Boulder in May 2020 and started the PhD with the Celestial and Spaceflight Mechanics Laboratory (CSML) soon after. Here\, she was named a 2021 Amelia Earhart Fellow and a 2022 Tau Beta Pi (TBP) Fellow. At CU she has been involved with the Aerospace Graduate Student Organization (AGSO)\, Women of Aeronautics and Astronautics (WoAA) India\, and Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC). During her undergraduate and graduate studies\, Yashica interned at Merit Engineering\, Collins Aerospace\, OneWeb\, and SpaceNav. InojosaDr. Raynell A. Inojosa is one of the two pioneer scholars of the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) Advanced Degrees for Accelerating Strategic Space R&D and Application (AD ASTRA) Scholarship Program. While still pursuing his degree\, he applied for and got accepted as a Senior Science Research Specialist at the Spacecraft Payload and Communications Systems Development Division (SPCSDD) of PhilSA. He received his PhD in Electronics Engineering degree at the Batangas State University – The National Engineering University. He underwent a sandwich program at the Laboratory of Lean Satellite and In-Orbit Experiment (LaSEINE) of Kyushu Institute of Technology to conduct the assembly\, integration\, and testing of his prototype on fractal patch antenna for cube satellite (CubeSat) application. \n  \nAs a young researcher\, Dr. Inojosa attended numerous international conferences and workshops hosted in Japan\, the USA\, Thailand\, South Korea\, India\, Indonesia\, and the United Kingdom to present his research works on ICT for sustainable development\, high-frequency engineering\, wireless communications\, and spacecraft communications subsystem—specifically on antenna technologies. Dr. Inojosa was a former Governor of the Institute of Electronics Engineers of the Philippines (IECEP) – Japan Chapter\, a recipient of the 2019 IEEE TOWERs Best Research Award and the 2022 Outstanding Presentation Award by the IEEE Tokyo Section\, and was hailed as one of the 2020 Ten Outstanding Electronics Engineers of the Philippines by IECEP\, Inc.

SUMMARY:SSA through Optical Sensors - Observatory Development using COTS Equipment
DESCRIPTION:Proliferating space debris is the paramount global challenge that the space community is facing. At present\, there is no global space traffic management system and there is a serious lack of consensus on sensitive thresholds when it comes to conjunction analysis and collision avoidance. In order to raise awareness about the nuances of the dynamic space environment and traffic management\, hands-on experience with SSA sensors especially from the academic sector can bring a paradigm shift in our understanding. Using small telescopes in large quantities and in a distributed fashion for use of space objects detection\, tracking\, and characterization has the potential to bring valuable insights into the space sustainability domain. With an evolving distributed network controlled by a consortium of universities and young professors\, the complicated technical nuances of the space debris problem can be addressed. In the last two decades\, the equipment manufacturers for deep space astronomy have made significant technical progress. These days\, commercially off-the-shelf and ready-to-be integrated astronomical equipment can be used to set up a research-grade SDA observatory on a low budget and in very less time. At present\, there is a serious lack of a number of SDA sensors around the world. In order to bridge the gap between the number of observations needed for accurate Space Traffic Management (STM) and Space Domain Awareness (SDA)\, stakeholders from academia and societal domains have to play an active role. This can be initiated by the use of optical observatories for sustainability purposes. This webinar will focus on how to build an optical observatory for the aforementioned purposes. The targeted audience will be young professionals\, especially from emerging countries that do not have any SDA optical observatories. By promoting awareness of the use of telescopes for SSA\, SDA\, and STM purposes\, emerging space-faring nations can play an active role in data acquisition and processing. \n  \nREGISTER HERE  \n  \n  \nConfirmed Speakers:  \nMahhad Nayyer is an astrodynamicist by profession and an ardent advocate of space sustainability. Mahhad’s areas of expertise are orbital mechanics\, space mission analysis and design\, spacecraft design\, human spaceflight\, and systems engineering. In particular\, Mahhad is pursuing the impactful role that emerging space economies/countries can play in the evolution of a global Space Traffic Management (STM) system/best practices. Mahhad is starting his graduate studies on the same topic at Purdue University starting Fall 2023. After high school\, Mahhad was awarded the Department of State International Cadet Exchange Programme scholarship\, letting him study and train at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. His academic area of concentration was orbital mechanics and spacecraft design within the major field of Astronautical Engineering. Mahhad is the recipient of several young professional awards and accolades including IAF Emerging Space Leader 2022 and AIAA ASCEND Diverse Dozen 2022. In 2020\, Mahhad enrolled in a postgraduate master’s programme in Space Systems Engineering and Business Engineering offered by Graz University of Technology\, Austria. As the astrodynamics lead\, Mahhad led his cohort’s SMAD design for a sub-geo CubeSat constellation capable of providing detection\, tracking\, characterisation\, and inspection services for geostationary and nearby anthropogenic space objects. His graduate research focussed on sensor pre-processing\, data acquisition\, image post-processing\, orbit determination\, cataloguing framework\, and correlation of geostationary objects. DESCRIPTION:Pharmaceuticals (used to diagnose\, treat\, cure or prevent disease) suffer from lack of stability on Earth and even more so in space. Over the next few decades\, there are plans for human space missions to the Moon and\, even further\, to Mars. What could be done to limit the degradation of pharmaceuticals (due to time/radiation/altered gravity) during deep space travel to keep the astronaut crew healthy and safe? What about manufacturing drugs in space? How can this knowledge help us to fight diseases here on Earth? And\, of course.. What is it like to be a space pharmacist? We have invited Dr. Marlise Araujo dos Santos (a Brazilian space pharmacology expert) and Paul Kamoun to inform us on the challenges and opportunities within the space environment. \nAt the end of the session we will open up the floor for questions. A Zoom link will be sent to registered participants. \n  \nAbout Dr Marlise Araujo dos Santos: \nMarlise Araujo dos Santos\, Brazilian pharmacist and specialist in Industrial Pharmacy\, holds a PhD degree in Pharmaceutical Technology and Aerospace Pharmacy from King’s College London. Dr. dos Santos was an Associate Professor at the School of Pharmacy\, Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS)\, a Coordinator of the Joan Vernikos Aerospace Pharmacy Laboratory\, Microgravity Centre\, PUCRS (www.pucrs.br/microg) and an invited lecturer for Space Pharmacology and Health MSc at King’s College London. Marlise is a member of the Board of Advisors of InnovaSpace\, a member of International Society for Telemedicine & eHealth and a founder of MyDIGICARE (a startup of Remote Pharmaceutical Care). Her research activities include evaluation of the effects of simulated microgravity on nanoemulsions and cells\, effects of hypergravity simulation on plants\, and stability of drugs subjected to pressure variations in simulated flight\, telepharmacy\, among others. \nAbout Paul Kamoun: \nPaul is responsible for SpacePharma global business development and commercialization activities worldwide in the pharmaceutical\, cosmetics\, biotechnology\, and medical sectors. He holds an engineering degree from SUPELEC in Paris\, France\, and a PhD in Earth and Planetary Sciences from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge\, USA. He has more than forty years of experience in the Space domain\, having worked on more than 150 space programs of NASA\, European Space Agency (ESA)\, French Space Agency (CNES)\, and ASI (Italian Space Agency)\, as Head of Advanced Space Projects\, overseeing new developments in Earth observation\, Planetary Science\, Astronomy\, Fundamental Physics and Telecommunications. He later became Vice-President for European Business at TAS\, the leading European company in the development of satellite systems. SUMMARY:Space Climate Datasets and Interpretation for Everyone
DESCRIPTION:Increasing access to space data can raise awareness about Earth’s situation. It helps to remove obstacles we have on our planet and change our perspective to see everything from a different angle.\nClimate change is one of the major problems humans face these days and needs social knowledge and engagement to be tackled. But understanding and interpreting Earth Observation datasets is not easy for everyone and it requires expertise. This presents a challenge that not everyone will become aware of the disruptive activities on Earth affecting climate change.\nThe UN SDGs project of the Space Safety and Sustainability Project Group aims to give open access to space-based climate data to the public for increasing social engagement in climate change. This webinar will cover different topics that can help everyone become a local ambassador in their own community and raise awareness about climate data\, data interpretation\, policies and regulations\, and data-sharing platforms.\nBy the end of this webinar\, you will get knowledge about accessible climate datasets\, how to use them and interpret raw data\, methods and platforms for sharing data with the public\, and policies for making space data available. \nAbout Chukwuma Okolie: \nChukwuma Okolie is a Lecturer at the Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics\, University of Lagos. His research interests are GIS and remote sensing applications\, data fusion and modelling of urban and environmental changes. Chukwuma is a member of the SGAC Space Technology for Earth Applications (STEA) Project Group. Within STEA\, he has served as a team lead in the REaltime Flood Risk Assessment in developing countries using Social media\, Optical and SAR satellite data (REFRA-SOS)\, and an earth observation analyst in the AIOFAR project. Chukwuma is currently pursuing his PhD in Remote Sensing at the University of Cape Town. The focus of his PhD research is the enhancement of digital elevation models (DEMs) using explainable tree-based ensemble machine learning. In 2017\, he was listed by xyHT as one of the 40 under 40 Geospatial Leaders worldwide\, and recently\, he was recognised as STEA PG Member of the Year 2022. Chukwuma is registered with the Surveyors Council of Nigeria (SURCON) and is a member of the Young Surveyors Network (YSN) in Nigeria and the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS). He is active in several multidisciplinary research groups\, is an active reviewer for scientific journals and is highly published. \nAbout Jan-Peter Ceglarek: \nJan-Peter Ceglarek is a space engineer with a focus on AI and blockchain technology. As an engineer for Parametry.ai\, he contributes to the Space DAO project\, where the advantages of distributed systems are used to bring fairness and trust to the increasingly tough problem of space traffic LEO and beyond.\nAdditionally\, as a PhD candidate at the ESALab@TU Darmstadt\, he develops the AI4CE system generation platform (a multi-purpose Digital Engineering playground) for future-proof system design both in big companies/agencies and the educational realm.\nBesides that\, he is a human who loves nature and is a fan of open-minded people with a positive error culture.\nAbout Alexander Gruber: \nAlexander Gruber received his M.Sc. degree in Geodesy and Geophysics in 2013\, and his Ph.D. degree in the technical sciences in 2016\, both graduated with excellence\, from the Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien)\, Austria. He has been affiliated with the United States Department of Agriculture\, USA\, the University of Melbourne\, Australia\,  the Catholic University of Leuven (KU Leuven)\, Belgium\, and the Research Foundation Flanders\, Belgium. Currently\, he is a postdoctoral researcher with the Climate and Environmental Remote Sensing research unit from the Department of Geodesy and Geoinformation\, TU Wien\, Austria. His research interests include land surface remote sensing\, data assimilation\, uncertainty modeling\, and water and carbon cycle interactions. He has published in numerous peer-reviewed scientific journals and frequently presents at international conferences and workshops. She is currently a professor emeritus at Scripps Research (California\, USA)\, and an advisor to Aspen Neuroscience (a company she founded to develop a cell replacement therapy for Parkinson’s disease). Dr. Loring is the recent recipient of Stem Cell Pioneer award\, Rosalind Franklin Award and was named as one of the 11 Most Influential Women in Advanced Therapies. She is interested in development of broad applications of pluripotent stem cells\, including investigating the effects of space flight on the nervous system. Last year her stem cells experiment has been sent to the International Space Station.
