The SGAC Space Medicine and Life Science Project Group is organizing an essay competition to bring 1 student to attend the Conference on Human Analogue Space Missions (CHASM) organized by Mars Society UK and taking place at the University of Cambridge, UK on April 2-3, 2022.

Description

Candidates shall write an essay of no more than 2000 words. The essay will describe one potential experiment to be performed during one analog astronaut mission lasting no longer than two weeks. The aim of the experiment will be testing innovative ideas, technologies, procedures, or instruments to sustain life in extraterrestrial environments. Proposed experiments could cover one of the following topics:

  • medical devices to support life in emergency situations, 
  • telemedicine/telehealth,
  • food and clothes production, 
  • time/resources management in confined spaces, 
  • psychological wellbeing in isolation.

Each essay will be divided into four sections (Introduction, Methods, Expected Results, Proposal Impact) and could include up to two images. 

Award

The award will support one person to attend the following event:

  • Conference on Human Analogue Space Missions: April 2-3, 2022

The award will cover ONLY the conference entrance ticket. Any other expense occurred to attend the conference needs to be covered by the selected winner.

How to Apply

All submissions must be made by using the Scholarship Submission Form before 6 March 2022, 23:59 GMT.

Guidelines

Eligibility

  1. The language of all submissions must be in English.
  2. Participants must be eligible SGAC members (registered on the SGAC website) between the ages of 18 and 35 years as of the 5st of March 2022.

It is strongly requested that applicants only apply if they are certain they can attend the conference and be in the UK at the time of the event in April. 

Submission

  1. The documents are due as an unlocked PDF document under 5 MB. The application shall be submitted via the Scholarship Submission Form. 
  2. The language of all submissions shall be English.
  3. In case of lack of quality of submissions, SGAC has the right to extend and or cancel the competition.

Reimbursement

  1. The award will be provided to the scholarship winner at the earliest possible after the annoucement
  2. Applicants are advised to not engage in any expenses until they have formal confirmation that the competition has been awarded. The SGAC is not liable for any expenses incurred by applicants in any case where competition is not awarded.

Copyright and Intellectual Property

  1. By submitting an entry, applicants agree to permit the SGAC and other participating organisations to use their names, affiliations, and headshot photo in connection with the scholarship. This also applies to the essay that is submitted: portions of this essay could be used for promotional purposes (the authors, of course, will be credited for the content).
  2. Copyright of the submitted entry shall remain with the contestants. However, by submitting an entry all contestants agree that SGAC and all affiliated organisers are granted non-exclusive reproduction rights regarding all submitted papers. SGAC and all affiliated organisers may also present ideas and findings generated by this competition at relevant conferences.

Liability

  1. Organisers shall not be responsible in the event that the Conference on Human Analogue Space Missions (CHASM) is cancelled. SGAC will not reimburse the winning author, even if he/she has already incurred expenses.
  2. Organisers shall not be responsible in the event that the award winner fails to attend the Conference on Human Analogue Space Missions (CHASM) or is unable to under extenuating circumstances; in that case, the award offer shall become void.
  3. Organisers shall not be responsible in the event that the award winner cannot obtain any necessary travel documents; if they are required but not obtained, the award offer shall become void.
  4. The award is not transferable to another event or individual.

Evaluation

Applications will be evaluated by a panel of SMLS PG representatives.
