SGAC Croatia Webinar Series #6
April 29, 2021 @ 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM CEST
The SGAC Croatia Webinar Series aims to inspire and motivate university students and young professionals in Croatia and abroad to grow a career in the space industry.
Inspired by the motivational stories from talented SGAC members from all around the world, the SGAC team in Croatia aims to bring the same excitement about space and self-development in Croatia and the region.
A series of 8 webinars will host local experts in various fields such as space science and engineering, space policy, space business and others, and give them a floor to share their projects, ideas, and experiences with the community.
Everyone is welcome to attend and will be able to interact with lecturers at the end of each webinar session.

The title of the sixth webinar is “Space Applications in Everyday Life – Satellite Data and Systems”. Our speakers, experienced professionals based in Croatia, will present the diverse applications of satellite positioning systems and remote sensing in many areas and activities.
In this webinar, listeners will be introduced to the application of satellite systems in everyday activities and research. The webinar is thematically divided into two parts: GNSS (Global navigation satellite systems) and their applications, and satellite system for Earth observation.
The first part of this webinar will describe the available GNSS systems with an emphasis on the European Galileo system as well as its new services that find purpose in everyday activities. A detailed example will be given for the application of the GNSS system in crisis management, more specifically earthquakes, which hit Croatia on several occasions in the past year. Besides crisis management, we will speak about the role of GNSS in the implementation of smart cities and IoT (Internet of Things) technology.
In the second part of the webinar, satellite systems for Earth observation will be described. Emphasis will be on those systems that are open to all users free of charge such as the Copernicus system with its services. The application of satellite altimetry for monitoring the sea surface will be presented. Satellite-based remote sensing is used for monitoring changes on Earth and making cartographic models and maps, which finds many applications in agriculture, forestry, industry and other sectors. The speakers will share practical examples and insight into this interesting and dynamic field.

Meet your speakers
Danijel Šugar received his PhD degree in Geomagnetism and Geodesy from the Faculty of Geodesy, University of Zagreb. Currently, he is the assistant professor at the Chair of Satellite Geodesy where he teaches courses related to Satellite Positioning and Navigation. His research activities are mainly focused on the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and its application in Geodesy and surveying. He has published a number of scientific articles, presented several papers at international conferences and participated in different scientific and Erasmus+ projects. Since March 2020 he is particularly interested in the assessment of the earthquake effects by the GNSS methods.
Marijan Grgić is a PostDoc researcher at the University of Zagreb Faculty of Geodesy. Marijan’s research interests fall within the scientific field of applied marine, satellite, and physical geodesy with a special focus on monitoring the sea-level change and its impact by combining radar satellite altimetry data, tide gauge and collocated data, the vertical land representations and their change derived from global digital elevation models, drone mapping and InSAR (Interferometric synthetic-aperture radar) technologies.
Currently, Ivan Tomljenović is a Head of Remote Sensing and GIS Laboratory within Oikon ltd Institute of Applied Ecology and a Coordinator of UNIGIS Study Centre Zagreb. He has a Master degree in Geodesy and Geoinformatics from the University of Zagreb and a Doctoral degree in Applied Geoinformatics from the University of Salzburg on the topic of object extraction from LiDAR data. He is specialized in LiDAR, UAV, Satellite Remote Sensing and Geoinformatics. His professional interests revolve around topics of LiDAR, Object-Based Image Analysis, Airborne and Satellite platforms, Advanced Remote Sensing, WebGIS design, Land Cover Mapping, Automated Classification, Machine Learning, Mobile App Design and Development.
The IoT domain of electrical engineering, with its extensive range of applicability is Davor Predavec‘s passion. Whether speaking about communication networks, HW/SW development, security, impact on the society, he will manage to get a detailed picture of the matter and strive to create a broader one in order to deliver the product or a service which serves the wide community.
As a responsible, but ready to play with state-of-the-art technology, Davor is a devoted engineer and a hardworking professional always keen to use the latter for connecting people, making information flow more fluent and broadened, and ultimately, making the world a better place for living. This is achieved through wide knowledge of ICT, but also psychology and philosophy of engineering, and integrating all the possible domains which one matter can converge to create a synthesis of a product or service.
People’s happiness is the most motivational fuel for Davor’s work. He sees technology as a perfect tool that can serve individuals or a community in technical aspects where there is a lack. Working as a call agent, Quality Engineer and later Manager of IoT, sales person and a rewarded student whose papers are published in known organizations such as IEEE, IHSI and many future others is a relevant fact which shows the great will to create sustainable cities in future.
Zvonimir Nevistić is an employee at the Faculty of Geodesy in Zagreb as an assistant at the Chair for Satellite Geodesy. He is currently conducting exercises in several courses and he actively participates in several international projects (GEOBIZ, SEED4NA, TODO, and completed BESTSDI), also actively participates in international and domestic conferences and training and publishes papers in domestic and international journals. He is an active member of the Copernicus Relay and Academy Network in Croatia and was one of the main organizers of the Copernicus Hackathon Zagreb. Currently, he is enrolled in the third year of PhD studies, and the title of his research project is „Improving the availability and usability of planetary spatial data research implementing international standards and the concept of spatial data infrastructure“.
Zvonimir will moderate the webinar.
