SG[France]2021 webinar series
May 28, 2021 @ 8:00 PM - 9:15 PM CEST
Climate change is a current issue. A lot of space firms of all sizes are thinking about how to use space to monitor and counter climate change. Satellites collect a large variety of data about the atmosphere, oceans, forests, agriculture … They are more efficient and gather more and more details.
To what extent do we/could we use space to face climate change?
There are a lot of applications which are lately being developed, with this webinar we will look deeper into 3 topics of space use to face climate change: ocean monitoring, forest monitoring and land monitoring.
After a presentation made by our 3 speakers from Eumetsat, German Orbital Systems, and Hydrosat, the participants will be able to ask their questions and to do short activities to foster teamwork and creativity towards this important challenge of fighting climate change from Space.
This webinar is the first episode of a series preparing the upcoming SG[France]2021 event, and will allow event’s participants and other participants to start thinking about the different topics and challenges that will be tackled during the day.

Confirmed Speakers
Dr Hayley Evers-King
Dr Hayley Evers-King is a marine applications expert at EUMETSAT in the User support and Climate Services division. She provides user support and training on ocean applications of satellite data, and manages feedback between user(s) and operational satellite agencies, mostly in support of the European Commission Copernicus Programme. Her research background covers the use of optics to derive information about the oceans.
She has worked throughout the satellite data value chain from the validation of satellite sensor measurements, to algorithm development and data use for various applications including harmful algal blooms and water quality services for aquaculture, ocean heat flux, carbon pools, climate model validation and marine spatial planning. She is a keen programmer, focusing exclusively on open source tools, and a passionate science communicator seeking novel ways to use new media to share science with new satellite data users and the public.
Prior to her current role, Hayley worked for 5 years as a Marine Earth Observation Scientist at Plymouth Marine Laboratory. She obtained a PhD in ocean remote sensing from the University of Cape Town, South Africa in 2014.
Daria Stepanova
Daria is a CTO at German Orbital Systems GmbH, Small Satellite Project Group (SSPG) co-leader, aerospace engineer, researcher and enthusiast with 7 years of experience in small satellites and subsystems design from idea to implementation, launch and operations. She was leading 8 CubeSat missions for various applications starting from Earth Observation to AIS and space weather monitoring.
For almost two years she has been spreading the knowledge about small satellites through SGAC SSPG. During this time the project group has conducted several researches on small satellite utilization supported by different organisations (e.g. UNICEF). Currently SSPG is investigating possibilities of CubeSat utilization for CO2 monitoring. Besides that, Daria is highly interested in the small satellite industry and technological trends.
