POLICY – RESEARCH
The Policy Team is on a mission to create meaningful change in the space sector by ensuring it is inclusive of all minority groups. We focus on researching and analyzing existing diversity, inclusion, and gender equality policies, while actively developing new frameworks that promote representation. Our work is data-driven, utilizing statistics on the status of minority groups within SGAC and beyond, allowing us to shape impactful policies based on real insights. Collaboration is key to our success: we work closely with all teams in the Project Group, SGAC members, and external stakeholders to foster an environment where everyone belongs.
We are committed to pushing boundaries and advancing gender equality and diversity across the space sector, making it a truly inclusive place for all.
The person applying for this position needs to demonstrate leadership and a commitment to working with teams and creating impactful projects.
All positions are unpaid and voluntary, and require SGAC membership (free registration on the SGAC website). Applicants must be aged 18-35 during the period of participation.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Research existing policies on diversity, inclusion, and gender equality in the space sector, both on regional level and international levels;
- Engage with partners and stakeholders and develop policies to make the space sector inclusive of all minority groups;
- Present the outcomes within the PG and to stakeholders in different formats;
- Proposal of new long-term projects and short-term actions for the Our Giant Leap team, based on the carried out research;
- Respond to and work on incoming research requests from the SGAC community;
- For the team lead position: prepare the yearly plan of milestones with the team, manage workshops and team meetings, lead the preparation of deliverables; lead and propose new collaborations within and outside of SGAC.

DESCRIPTION
We are thrilled to announce an exciting opportunity to join our Policy Team as part of the Diversity and Gender Equality (Our Giant Leap) Project Group (DGE PG). We are currently researching and analyzing policies on diversity, inclusion, and gender equality across various regions, including Asia Pacific, Africa, the Americas, the Middle East, and Europe. To ensure a well-rounded and inclusive approach, we are seeking passionate individuals from these regions to contribute valuable perspectives.
The Policy Team is committed to making the space sector inclusive of all minority groups. We work closely with partners and stakeholders to develop policies that advance gender equality and diversity. This is a unique opportunity to be part of a global initiative making a real impact in the space industry.

DIVINAS
Are you passionate about human spaceflights and interested in how astronauts’ profile evolved through time and space? Do you want to work on the definition of what makes an astronaut since 1961 and how it changed since then? Are you interested in investigating the increasing diversity in astronaut selections? Social media plays an important role in today’s society. The DIVINAS team will continue strongly working on both research, the astronaut profile evolution and also the parastronaut experiments research. Now there is a need for wider diversity, to be promoted and encouraged. Many astronaut recruitments are taking place and the project group wants to play a role in encouraging diversity. - Coordination of the communication strategy made around both the experiments we will work on the parastronauts research and also on the astronaut profile evolution research.
- Organization of communication campaigns, webinars and other contents.

When the European Space Agency launched the call for applications for their astronaut corps in 2022. It was also the first time an agency opened positions to parastronauts, which was a big step towards diversity. With the recent rise in private missions, new opportunities are exploited as well. The aim of this project is to follow up on this ambitious initiative and study the environment in which the recruitment is made to include a wider range of people, the different challenges they meet and how it could be implemented at a larger scale through more space agencies. Therefore, in our team we are working on designing different analog mission experiments for parastronauts.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design and implement analog mission experiments tailored for parastronauts to simulate real mission conditions.
- Research recruitment practices and propose strategies to enhance diversity and inclusion within astronaut corps.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure experiments support accessibility and align with the project’s inclusivity goals.
