Tunisia is taking its first steps in the space sector; in the last few years, The small country has established the foundations that will help develop the future of the field. The ecosystem in Tunisia is versatile and diverse; it consists of non-profit organizations, private companies, overseas companies, and governmental institutions. Several space-related projects are currently being executed in Tunisia for academic, research, and commercial purposes. A large Tunisian diverse community and the space sectors world leaders like JAXA, ESA, and NASA support these projects.

Young Space Activities Overview in Tunisia

  • Africa-Japan CubeSat Cooperation Workshop: This workshop was held on August 25th and 26th, 2022, and was the first in-person KiboCube Academy by UNOOSA and JAXA, supported by UNISEC-Global. The aim was to promote cooperation between Africa and Japan in CubeSats.

  • International Aerospace and Defense Exhibition (IADE): This exhibition lasted from October 12th to 16th, 2022. It allowed companies in the aerospace and defense industries to showcase their products and services.

  • Kibo-RPC 2022 Competition: This robot programming challenge was organized by JAXA and NASA. The aim was to encourage the development of new technologies in the field of robotics.

  • SPACE STAR’2022: This event was organized by the Microelectronics and Nanotechnology Research Center of Sousse (CRMN) on October 27th and 29th, 2022. The focus was on the latest advancements in space research and technology.

  • NASA SpaceApp Challenge: This international competition invites participants to develop innovative solutions to global challenges using NASA data.

  • Stratospheric Balloons Launch: The Tunisia’s City of Science planned to launch stratospheric balloons in 2023. This project aimed to gather scientific data and provide educational opportunities for students.

KiboCube Academy 2022: The 1st in-person KiboCube Academy in conjunction with the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD8), the Kibocube Academy, a technical course on nanosatellite development, on August 25,26th 2022 at the “Africa-japan cubesat cooperation workshop”.

Tunisat-1: TUNSAT-1 is the first Tunsian educational satellite. It is being manufactured in Tunisia (ESPITA university) and the scheduled launch date in 2024 TUNSAT-1 will be launched and deployed for free , as Tunisia is the winner of the sixth edition of the KIBOcube program by JAXA.

Challenge-1 by Telnet: Challenge One is Tunisia’s first domestically made satellite. The satellite was built by a team of telecommunications engineers from TelNet, as an Internet of Things satellite. This marked Tunisia as the 6th African country and the 1st country in the Maghreb to manufacture its satellite. The satellite is to be the first of a constellation of 30 satellites.

CERT Testing facilities: The Telecommunications Studies and Research Center is a multidisciplinary public institution under the supervision of the Ministry of Communication Technologies. CERT has some of the most well-equipped facilities in North Africa ( Electromagnetic compatibility, Approval, and radio engineering, etc.)
