WORKING GROUPS

WG1: Emerging Space Technologies and Strategic Partnerships for Emerging Asia-Pacific Nations

Emerging space nations in the Asia-Pacific face unique challenges, including limited budgets, infrastructure, and access to cutting-edge technology.

However, new developments in small satellite technology, data analytics, and collaborative platforms offer significant potential to accelerate space capabilities in these nations.

To identify key technologies and collaborative strategies that can be utilized by emerging space nations in the Asia-Pacific region to develop sustainable, scalable space programs. The focus will be on cost-effective solutions that align with regional needs and foster self-reliance.

  • What space technologies and techniques are most accessible and effective for emerging space nations in the region?
  • How can smaller nations collaborate to leverage resources and infrastructure for mutual benefit?
  • What are the best practices in building sustainable space programs from the ground up?

WG2: Space Technologies for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Island Nations

Island nations in the Asia-Pacific are highly vulnerable to climate change, natural disasters, and public health crises, yet they often lack access to space technologies that could help mitigate these challenges.

Satellite technologies, earth observation (EO), and space biology can play a critical role in addressing these issues, but adoption has been slow.

To explore how space technologies can be tailored to the specific needs of island nations in the Asia-Pacific, particularly in the areas of climate action, disaster response, agriculture, and public health. Participants will examine how to localize space solutions and overcome barriers to adoption.

  • How can satellite and EO technologies be better localized to serve the unique needs of island nations?
  • What is preventing greater adoption of space solutions for sustainable development in these regions?
  • Who is responsible for ensuring the effective implementation of space technologies, and how can we bridge gaps between technology providers and local needs?

WG3: Cultural Perspectives in Space Exploration: Promoting Arts, Heritage, and Identity of Asia-Pacific

The Asia-Pacific is a diverse region rich in cultural heritage, and space exploration offers a new platform for cultural expression and preservation. Integrating arts, heritage, and cultural narratives into space exploration can inspire new ways of thinking about space and foster inclusivity in the global space dialogue.

To explore how space can serve as a new frontier for the arts and culture in the Asia-Pacific. This working group will discuss creative initiatives, such as space fashion shows, comics, and digital art, that highlight regional heritage while pushing the boundaries of space exploration.

  • How can we use space as a medium for cultural expression and heritage preservation in the Asia-Pacific?
  • What role can art and creative industries play in making space exploration more inclusive?
  • How can cultural narratives shape future space missions and collaborations?

WG4: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Tangible Actions in the Space Sector of Asia-Pacific

Despite growing efforts to promote diversity and inclusion, the space sector, particularly in the Asia-Pacific, still struggles with gender disparity, lack of representation, and inequitable opportunities. Moving beyond conversations, this working group will focus on actionable solutions.

To develop practical, region-specific strategies for achieving diversity, equality, and equity in the space industry. This includes fostering male allies, creating targeted programs for underrepresented groups, and exploring initiatives such as the launch of Women in Aerospace and all-women analog astronaut missions.

  • What tangible actions can be implemented to promote diversity and inclusion in the Asia-Pacific space sector?
  • How can men actively contribute to gender equity efforts in the space industry?
  • What region-specific challenges exist, and how can they be addressed through targeted programs or collaborations?

WG5: Space Law and Policy: Advancing Space Sustainability in Asia-Pacific

As space activities in the Asia-Pacific region increase, the need for sustainable practices and strong governance becomes critical. The growing commercialization of space, combined with environmental concerns and geopolitical competition, presents both challenges and opportunities for Asia-Pacific nations to lead in the development of sustainable space policies.

To assess the current landscape of space law and policy in the Asia-Pacific, identify gaps in sustainability practices, and develop regional strategies to promote responsible and sustainable space activities. This includes discussions on space debris mitigation, responsible satellite deployment, and regional cooperation.

  • What are the key challenges to achieving space sustainability in the Asia-Pacific?
  • How can regional collaboration be strengthened to address space governance and sustainability issues?
  • What role should Asia-Pacific nations play in global efforts to develop space sustainability policies?
