Ghana recently embarked on a campaign captioned the “Year of Return” organised by the Ministry of Tourism and which was to commemorate the 400 year anniversary since the first slaves left its shores. It targeted Africans in the diaspora particularly descendants of slaves to visit Ghana as well as relocate permanently. Ghana, formerly Gold Coast was a major port from which slaves departed during the transatlantic slave trade. The campaign was reported by CNN and many other major news networks as a huge success adding an estimated 1.9 Billion dollars to the Ghanaian economy.
