AF-SGW18 Press Release

July 24, 2018

The African Space Generation workshop series is back and this year it’s bigger and better than ever!

Around 100 delegates students, young professionals, industry representatives and space agencies will all gather for a 2-day workshop at the Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre (RGSC) in Mauritius.

Following a successful workshop in Nigeria in 2017, the Space Generation Advisory Council in support of the United Nations Programme On Space Applications is proud to announce that the second edition of its flagship event for the African region, the 2nd African Space Generation Workshop will be held on the 17th and 18th of December 2018 in Port Louis, the vibrant capital city of Mauritius.

The regional event will provide a platform for space enthusiasts, academia, businesses, space agencies and other stakeholders to come together for two days of exciting and interactive high-level panel discussions, keynotes, and participant-led working groups. The theme for this year’s workshop is Launching Africa: Space Exploration, Innovation and Business. Our focus is on regional space and scientific issues which are targeted to support future regional and global space policy initiatives, encourage youth contribution and enhance international cooperation.

Event organiser, Bioscientist and SGAC National Point of Contact for Mauritius – Hansley Noruthun adds that the workshop is the ideal opportunity for delegates to interact and network with experts from various sectors through plenary and panel sessions and interdisciplinary working group discussions. “This is your opportunity to connect and get involved in the growth of the African space sector. The beautiful island of Mauritius is ready to welcome you to explore new horizons!”

All discussions are expected to produce recommendations to relevant public, private and non-governmental sectors helping to shape the future of African space industry. Reports and recommendations from the workshop will be presented at high-level conferences and included in the SGAC annual report submitted to the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UN COPUOS).

You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to join us in Mauritius. Whether you’re an aspiring asteroid mining magnate, laser-focused CubeSat engineer, starry-eyed astronomer, satellite-wielding biologist, or just curious about the application of space technology to Earth-based problems, this is the event for you!

Registration for delegates will open on 1st August & closes on 2nd September.
