Art Competition Scholarship – SGx2025

SGAC has partnered with Northrop Grumman to bring 1 student or young professional to attend the 10th SGx (March 10-11th, 2025) and SATELLITE conference (March 10th-13th, 2025) in Washington D.C., USA.

Description

SGx is a fast-paced, content-rich conference modeled on the TEDx “lightning talk” format, creating an environment where students, young professionals, industry experts, and government executives gather to network, share insights, and inspire each other. This year’s conference theme, “Ventures Beyond Earth: Exploration Meets Enterprise”, is focused around innovations of exploration in the Space Industry. 

SGx2025 stands out as a unique two-day event focused on cultivating the next generation of space leaders, connecting them with their peers and experts, exposing them to a diverse set of knowledge, and empowering them with unparalleled speaking and career opportunities.

SGx2025’s engaging program includes:

• Thematic expert “lightning talk” sessions, followed by moderated Q&A panels
• Young Professional and Student lightning talks
• A dedicated SGx lunch with a featured sponsor keynote
• Networking sessions, breaks, and receptions throughout the morning, day, and evening
• Workshop to grow and utilize skills, followed by a Shark Tank-style pitch competition
• Interactive Speed Networking event
• Space Art Competition and Art Show

Award

The total value of the scholarship is up to $2500 USD, which may cover:

• SGx2025 and SATELLITE Registration fee
• Round-trip travel via airfare
• Accommodation (Private hotel room for four nights. Check in: March 9th ; Check out: March 13th)
• Food
• Local transportation

How to Apply

To apply, you will need to complete the Scholarship Submission Form at the bottom, including your artwork, by 15 December 2024, 23:59 GMT.

Your submission should follow the competition guidelines below.

Application will contain:

• Name and contact of the artist

• Title and short description of the artwork. Include the medium of the artwork. (limited to 200 words)

• Artwork as a (printable) high-quality file (.png or .pdf for example)

• Do you require a Visa to attend? (this is informational only)

Guidelines

Eligibility

• This application is strictly open to young professionals and students between the ages of 18 and 35 at the time of the event.
• The artwork should include a reference to “Ventures Beyond Earth: Exploration Meets Enterprise” (this year’s SGx2025 theme).
• The artwork falls under a physical medium (i.e. painting, print, collage, sculpture/3D works, ceramics, textiles, etc.) to be printed/presented physically in the gallery.
• Art was created within the last year.
• Art can’t have been previously submitted to another SGAC competition and cannot have won any previous competitions.
• All submissions shall be original creations.
• Limited to one artistic contribution created by a single artist. 
• All submissions shall be made using the online form provided. Any submissions after the deadline will not be considered. The Selection Committee reserves the right to extend the competition deadline.
• The entrant artist must hold full ownership over the work submitted. Because of this, while A.I. generated work is a fast developing field, art generated via A.I. generative software or services should not be submitted.
• By submitting your artwork you are affirming your availability to attend the conference in person. 
• The language of all submissions must be in English.
• Each submission should include the following:

  • Do you require a Visa to attend? (this is informational only)

In the interest of spreading opportunities to more members, SGAC reserves the right to prioritize applicants who have not recently received another SGAC scholarship of a similar nature. “Recently” is defined as having received a travel grant in the past 2 years, in the same category (either international or regional/national) as this posted award. International awards include scholarships for international events such as SGC/IAC, SGFF and Space Symposium, while regional/national awards refer to events, such as the Space Generation Workshops (SGW), national space generation events (SG[country]) or other regional or national conferences. In the event that SGx2025 is forced to be held online due unforeseen circumstances, this scholarship will not be counted as an international travel grant, and winners are eligible to apply for another travel grant in the next 2 years.

It is strongly requested that applicants only apply if they are certain they can attend SGx and be in the United States at the time of the event in March.

Submission

1. The application shall be submitted via the Scholarship Submission Form. 
2. The language of all submissions shall be English.
3. To apply, you will need to submit the form below. 
4. SGAC has the right to extend and/or cancel the competition.

Responsibilities of the Winner

1. The winner shall:
   • Attend the entire SGx2025
   • Submit a short report (2 pages excluding pictures) or a video describing his or her experience at SGx2025 for inclusion on the SGAC and Northrop Grumman website, newsletter or social media outlets.

All responsibilities shall be fulfilled and reports etc. submitted not later than September 30, 2025. In case the scholarship awardee does not complete the scholarship requirements on time, the scholarship funds will be transferred to SGAC general budget to continue supporting the mission and work of SGAC.  

Reimbursement

1. The award will be paid out after SGx2025 and SATELLITE, no later than 30 days after fulfillment of all responsibilities listed above.
2. The scholarship award reimbursement is conditioned on the awardee fulfilling the scholarship requirements no later than September 30, 2025.
3. In case the winner receives funding for SGx by any other organisation, the Scholarships Coordinators shall be informed. If the applicants don’t inform the Scholarships Coordinators, SGAC holds the right to not reimburse the winning author. SGAC aims to reduce the number of double scholarships and will work with the winners to develop a solution in these cases.
4. Applicants are advised to not engage in any expenses until they have formal confirmation that the competition has been awarded. The SGAC is not liable for any expenses incurred by applicants in any case where competition is not awarded, or above the value of the awarded grant.
5. Reimbursements will follow the SGAC Scholarships Travel Policy & Reimbursement Guidelines. Please make sure to consult the Guidelines before incurring expenses.

Copyright and Intellectual Property

1. By submitting your work, you agree to grant the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 4.0 International License. This confirms that you hold the copyrights to your work, with SGAC being allowed to display your work on its website, social media, and other web, digital, and print related platforms, on which you will be attributed.
2. By submitting your work, you confirm that you have read and understood the SGAC Code of Conduct, and that your work is in line with the spirit of all SGAC Governance Policies.
3. By submitting your work, you guarantee the originality of your work, confirm that you hold all the copyrights to this work, and confirm that your work does not breach any copyrights held by any other parties. You additionally agree to indemnify SGAC in the case of any copyright claims against your submitted piece of work by any other parties.

You agree that SGAC reserves the exclusive right to determine the works which are displayed on its platforms. SGAC shall also be the sole determiner of the amount of time a work shall be displayed.

Liability

1. Organisers shall not be responsible if SGx2025 and/or SATELLITE are canceled. SGAC will not reimburse the winning author, even if they have already incurred expenses.
2. Organisers shall not be responsible if the award winner fails to attend SGx2025 and/or SATELLITE or is unable to under extenuating circumstances; in that case, the award offer shall become void.
3. Organisers shall not be responsible if the award winner cannot obtain any necessary travel documents; if they are required but not obtained, the award offer shall become void.
4. The award is not transferable to another event or individual.

Evaluation

Applications will be evaluated by the SGx2025 organizing team and Northrop Grumman representatives based on the answers provided to the aforementioned questions. The top scoring piece of artwork will be awarded the entire scholarship, however the top 10 highest scoring art submissions will be displayed at the conference.
