SGAC x ECSL collaboration comes back with the 2nd edition of the Model UN COPUOS!
From the 25th to the 27th of October 2023
in Paris
Join us for 3 days of discussions during Model UN Committee on the Uses of Outer Space!
Representing one of the United Nations Member States, you will discuss the topics of sustainability of outer space. As such, you shall fit within your assigned Nation’s beliefs and political or economical interests, negotiate with other countries, and try to shape the future of Space Law!
Background
The Outer Space became accessible to humankind in 1957, when the first satellite entered the orbit. Soon, the law followed. The first treaty to be widely accepted among space actors, the Outer Space Treaty in 1967, was pioneering the legal dimension of Space. By drawing from the Antarctic Treaty, it regulated the use and access rules to this realm. Whilst a total of 5 space treaties were developed and partially implemented by UN Member States, none managed to reach a consensus since 1984.
We use space every day through communication, navigation, and monitoring capabilities of Earth orbits’ infrastructure. Yet, the sustainability of our use of outer space is not regulated. This year’s edition of the SGAC x ECSL Model COPUOS aims at including young generation into the discussion on Sustainable Space.
This collaboration of SGAC and the European Center for Space Law will give you an opportunity to meet and network with multiple experts in the field of Space Law and broaden your horizons to work towards a sustainable future.
