SGAC is looking for a volunteer to become the Lead of Events for Project Groups, within the Project Group Coordination team. The lead will work with and report to the Project Group Coordinators.

About the Project Groups

SGAC operates as the largest international community of students and young professionals interested in the space sector. There are presently eleven Project Groups (PGs) with a rapidly increasing membership base across all six global regions. Each PG is uniquely different, covering a  wide range of topics in the space sector from space exploration and space technology to law and policy, diversity, and human rights. Each PG seeks to connect like-minded young professionals and students in their chosen field of interest, to deliver high-quality contributions to each specialization, and to help educate and develop the membership body to be future experts and leaders.

Position and Responsibilities

The Events lead is a volunteer who will support project coordination activities within SGAC, operating as part of the PG coordination team. The Events lead will be expected to coordinate and support all events of the SGAC Project Groups. Events will include webinars, workshops, small conferences and hackathons, either virtually or in person. This role will work closely with the SGAC Events Team.

The lead will be given strong flexibility to shape the position as they see best and appropriate while being expected to lead a new flagship event for the SGAC PGs: an annual workshop expected to take place at IAC or similar so that each PG presents their work to a global audience.

The duties of the successful candidate will include the following but are not be limited to:

  • Support the PG Coordination Team to review bids/proposals for Project Group events, in close cooperation with the SGAC Events Coordination Team
  • Follow the planning of Project Group events, support and ensure regular communications with the Managers and Organizing Teams
  • Make sure all Project Group events are of similar high quality/standards and comply with the SGAC mission, vision and set of rules
  • Document Project Group events and create a knowledge base for future Managers (checklists, templates, etc.)
  • Relay lessons learned from different SGAC events to the future Event Managers

These are appointed volunteer positions. The appointment will be for 2 years, with the possibility of renewal for an additional 2 consecutive years. 

Estimated time commitment: On average 4 hours per week

Note: This is an unpaid volunteer position.

Necessary Qualifications

  • SGAC membership: registration on the SGAC website and below 34 years of age at the time of appointment
  • Be a citizen of a United Nations Member State
  • Be between 18 and 35 years old during the appointment
  • Demonstrate leadership and teamwork experience
  • Possess good communication skills in English and preferably in other United Nations official languages
  • Possess a basic understanding of SGAC and the organisation’s Project Groups
  • To have experience in a voluntary organisation. Experience in media and communications would be appreciated but not essential.
  • Have the necessary time to allocate to support in their development

PG Coordination Team members are appointed for a term of two years, and may serve two consecutive terms. The position will have a probationary period of 3 months.
