The Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) is seeking a talented volunteer to serve as a Web Developer for the Education and Professional Development (EPD) Platform. In this role, the selected candidate will play a crucial role in developing and enhancing the functionality of the EPD Website and the user interface of SGAC’s EPD initiatives. Responsibilities include building and maintaining a robust and intuitive website, implementing responsive design, and ensuring seamless navigation. 

As one of SGAC’s five fundamental pillars, the EPD Platform has its own Public Relations & Communications (PR&Comms) Team, which is overseen by two managers who coordinate with the EPD Coordinators. Therefore, the person in this position will work with and report to the EPD Public Relations & Communications Managers.

About SGAC’s Education & Professional Development (EPD) Platform:

The EPD Platform is the central coordination arm that organizes, provides, and supports education and professional development activities across SGAC. It aims to serve as a gateway for those interested in starting a career in the space industry, providing various opportunities to gain technical knowledge, receive mentorship, and gain hands-on experience on technical projects. With an unwavering commitment to inclusivity and accessibility, it is an open platform available to the global SGAC Community, providing a wide range of resources and opportunities designed to meet the needs of individuals at different stages of their careers and across all of our regions.

Goals & Objectives

  • Collaborate with the other SGAC Pillars and industry partners to offer high-quality education, S.T.E.A.M. outreach, and professional development opportunities.
  • Build awareness of educational and professional development activities within and outside of SGAC and improve accessibility to space education.
  • Support efforts to translate projects (e.g., hackathons, papers) and launch new EPD initiatives.

Responsibilities

In summary, the duties that come along with this position include but are not limited to:

  • Website Development and Enhancement
    1. Design, develop, and deploy functional and visually appealing web pages for the EPD Platform, ensuring consistency with SGAC’s overall brand identity.
    2. Familiarize oneself with the web development tools and practices used and defined by the Global SGAC Web & Data Team.
  • Maintenance and Optimization
    1. Regularly update and maintain the EPD website, ensuring content is current, relevant, and engaging.
    2. Monitor website performance, identify and resolve issues (e.g., broken links, loading errors), and implement enhancements to improve speed and efficiency.
  • EPD Teams Support
    1. Work closely with the PR & Comms Team Managers, Graphic Designer, and other EPD Teams to ensure the website’s content and layout meet communication and marketing objectives.
    2. Provide technical support and expertise to other EPD Teams as needed.
  • Testing and Quality Assurance
    1. Conduct thorough testing of all website updates and new features on various devices and browsers to ensure consistent performance and user experience.
    2. Collect and analyze feedback from users to make continuous improvements.

Estimated time commitment: 2 – 5 hours per week.

The position will have a probationary period of 3 months.

Necessary Qualifications

To be considered for this position, applicants shall possess the following qualifications:

  • Be a registered SGAC member (Individuals can register for free on the SGAC Website)
  • Be a citizen of a United Nations Member State
  • Be between 18 and 35 years old during the appointment
  • Serious interest in space-related activities, education, and professional development.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, quick-turnaround international environment and meet deadlines without compromising the quality of work
  • Professional Fluency (Speaking, Reading, and Writing) in English
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a virtual team.
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Cross-cultural and communication awareness

Ideal Qualifications

  • Background in Computer Science, Web Development, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Strong portfolio showcasing familiarity with web development frameworks and some understanding of back-end development concepts.
  • Exposure to CMS platforms like WordPress (including Avada Builder) and basic proficiency in front-end technologies, such as HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript.
  • Experience in website design with a focus on UX/UI.
