Working Groups
Working Groups
SG[Colombia] 2025 will feature five dynamic Working Groups (WGs), each focused on different areas of development to position Colombia within the global space value chain. Students and young professionals will have a unique opportunity to interact with experts in the following topics:
- Building Colombia’s Space Ecosystem
- Analog Missions and Space Exploration
- Artificial Intelligence and Geographic Information Systems
- Scientific Outreach
- Space Health Sciences
Each WG will serve as a discussion space for generating and advancing innovative ideas, which will be presented at the end in the form of a pitch. All WGs will aim to enhance participants’ presentation skills, enabling them to effectively communicate and sell an idea in a short period in a clear, persuasive, and engaging manner.
WG1 – Building Colombia’s Space Ecosystem: Driving Space Entrepreneurship, Edifying a Space Policy for Colombia
Colombia has high-value productive vocations that could become its global flagship if it transitions into a space technology-based society. This workshop will explore Colombia’s growth potential in the space industry, how it can achieve international positioning, and how space regulations may contribute to or challenge this process.
- Entrepreneurship and networking
- Science and technology-promoting policies
- Job opportunities in the space and non-space sectors
Guiding Questions:
- What is Colombia’s position in the regional and global space ecosystem?
- What opportunities does Colombia have in the sector (niches to fill, services to provide, products to offer)?
- How can the country build on its current foundation to strengthen its position in the space sector?
WG2 – Analog Missions and Space Exploration: Advancing Space Sustainability
The hostile environments of space have driven technological advancements that have transformed daily life on Earth. This workshop will explore how local research in Colombia can contribute to space exploration challenges, promoting sustainability through knowledge preservation, resource security, and long-term benefits for future generations.
- From space to Earth
- From Earth to space
- International agreements for space exploration
Guiding Questions:
- What is Colombia’s potential for offering simulation environments that mimic extreme space-like conditions?
- How can analog research in Colombia be conducted while ensuring the preservation of natural environments and the sustainability of local communities?
- How can Colombia attract international research on analog environments to its simulated settings?
WG3 – Artificial Intelligence and Geographic Information Systems: Transforming Spatial Data into Actionable Insights
Colombia has emerged as an international leader in AI and Big Data solutions. Optimized information facilitates decision-making in risk management, territorial planning, and conservation efforts. This workshop will explore how spatial data can be leveraged to address territorial challenges in Colombia.
- Disaster monitoring and prediction using AI and GIS
- Risk management and response to natural disasters
- Conservation of strategic ecosystems with AI and GIS
Guiding Questions:
- How can Colombia’s current technological positioning be leveraged to address national challenges (land use planning, zoning, monitoring, prediction, conservation) through space-based technologies and data?
- How can the adoption of these technologies in Colombia foster awareness of the importance of space research for solving national needs?
- How can Colombia expand its potential in AI, Big Data, and GIS to better integrate spatial data and capitalize on existing and emerging opportunities in the sector?
WG4 – Scientific Outreach: Bridging Science and Society
Creating spaces that connect the scientific community with the general public is a way to build a Space4All society. This workshop will explore how space-related knowledge is generated through satellite data, analog missions, and field experiments in extreme environments, and how it should be shared and integrated into society for sustainable practices and improved living conditions.
- STEAM education as a tool for transformation
- Social appropriation of space knowledge
- Space awareness in the productive sector: fostering dialogue to optimize industry processes using space science and technology
Guiding Questions:
- How can Colombia’s space ecosystem collaborate to develop effective and consolidated strategies for the social appropriation of space technologies and applications?
- How can these outreach strategies reach communities or groups not traditionally connected to the space sector?
- What existing or needed tools in Colombia could help expand the critical mass of the space ecosystem, increasing the number of influential agents and change-makers?
WG5 – Space Health Sciences: Advancing Human Well-being Beyond Earth
Guiding Questions: Coming soon…
