National Academies Early Career Program for Space Science Week 2020

The Space Studies Board (SSB) of The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will be hosting an Early Career Program during the 2020 Space Science Week taking place on March 31 – April 2, 2020, in Washington, DC.

The Space Studies Board of the National Academies of Sciences will be partnering with the Space Generation Advisory Council to select two SGAC members to attend Space Science Week.

SGAC members who are based in the United States, are invited to submit an application. Individuals selected will be provided with admission, travel, and accommodation expenses to support attendance to the event.

Description

The purpose of this competition is to select two participants currently residing in the United States to take part in the discussions of specific committees, along with other activities scheduled for Space Science Week.

The committees are as follows:

Space Science Week will be taking place from March 30th until April 2nd, 2020 at the historic National Academy of Sciences Building in Washington, DC.

Award

Two SGAC members will be selected to attend Space Science Week by the Space Studies Board of the National Academies of Sciences and SGAC. Individuals selected will be provided with admission, travel, and accommodation expenses to support attendance to the event, in coordination with the Space Studies Board of the National Academies of Sciences.

How to Apply

To apply, you will need to prepare the following documents:

  • A CV (maximum 2 pages)
  • A letter of intent including:
    • The reason why you wish to join the committee meeting
    • Recent work on projects that you are working on and are relevant to the committee’s discussions

All submissions must be made by using the Scholarship Submission Form.

Your submission should follow the competition guidelines below.

Guidelines

Eligibility

  1. Participants must be eligible SGAC members (registered on the SGAC website) between the ages of 18 and 35 years as of the 2nd of April, 2020.
  2. Participants must currently reside in the United States.
  3. Participants must be PhD students and early career professionals who have completed their doctorate within the past five years.
  4. Scholarship organisers and judges are not eligible for this award.

Submission

  1. The language of all submissions must be English.
  2. All submissions must be made by the 2nd of March 2020, 23:59 GMT. Any submissions after the deadline will not be considered.

Responsibilities of the Winners

The winner shall:

  • Coordinate in a timely manner with the Space Studies Board of the National Academies of Sciences.
  • Attend the designed activities of the Space Science Week in their entirety.
  • Write a short report (up to 2 pages without considering pictures) describing their experience at Space Science Week for inclusion on the SGAC website or newsletter.

All responsibilities shall be fulfilled no later than April 30th 2020.

Travel arrangements

  • Individuals selected will be provided with admission, travel, and accommodation expenses to support attendance to the event.
  • Travel and hotel arrangements will be made by the SSB in consultation with the selected participants, and according to Academies’ guidelines and policies.
  • Breakfast and lunch each day will be provided at the meeting, along with dinner on the first and second evening.
  • Other per diem expenses will be the responsibility of the awardee.
  • The award includes an invitation to the annual Space Science Week dinner and public lecture.

Copyright and Intellectual Property

  1. By submitting an entry, applicants agree to permit the SGAC to use their names, affiliations, and headshot photo in connection with the award. This also applies to the that is submitted: portions of this essay could be used for promotional purposes (the authors, of course, will be credited for the content).
  2. Copyright of the submitted entry shall remain with the contestants. However, by submitting an entry all contestants agree that SGAC and all affiliated organisers are granted non-exclusive reproduction rights regarding all submitted papers. SGAC and all affiliated organisers may also present ideas and findings generated by this competition at relevant conferences.

Liability

  1. Organisers shall not be responsible in the event that the award winner fails to attend the Space Science Week or is unable to attend under extenuating circumstances; in that case the award offer shall become void.
  2. Organisers shall not be responsible in the event that the award winner cannot obtain any necessary travel documents; if they are required but not obtained, the award offer shall become void.
  3. The Award is not transferable to another individual or event.

Evaluation

Applications will be evaluated by a panel comprised of the SGAC Scholarships Team and the Space Studies Board. The evaluation will be made based on the following criteria:

  • Applicant’s CV and past experiences (30%)

  • Letter of Intent and Motivation (70%)
