You may have heard there are thousands of commercial satellites in low-Earth orbit and many more vying to launch soon. These satellites all reflect sunlight to various degrees and are changing the game for all ground-based observers worldwide. Join Dr. Meredith Rawls, astronomy researcher at UW/Rubin Observatory and satellite mitigation leader at the IAU CPS (cps.iau.org), to learn what is happening, how astronomers are responding, and what you can do to help preserve and protect our skies.

Speaker:
Full Name: Dr. Meredith Rawls
Bio: I work with the Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) group at the University of Washington. I am a Research Scientist in the Department of Astronomy and a DiRAC Fellow. The LSST will collect frames for a ten-year high-res full-color movie of the night sky beginning in 2023. My background is in stellar astrophysics, and I also work to understand and disseminate how the proliferation of Low-Earth-orbit satellites affects astronomy.
