Joseph Liberato Agudelo
Born and raised in Colombia, I always knew I wanted to be an engineer and would often contemplate the stars, dreaming of contributing to space exploration. However, living in Colombia made this dream seem like a distant goal. At age 15, I had the opportunity to migrate to the US, specifically Vero Beach, Florida.
My journey into space gained momentum during my junior year of high school in Florida, where an inspirational teacher at my High School Jeff Bush reignited my long-lost dream of contributing to space exploration through the field of bioastronautics. With newfound passion, I pursued biomedical engineering in college, finding mentorship and guidance from Dr. Sunny Narayanan, a leading expert in bioastronautics.
Co-founding and serving as co-president of Students for the Exploration and Development of Space (SEDS) at FAMU-FSU has been a remarkable adventure. Our mission is to unite diverse and interdisciplinary backgrounds for collaborative space exploration, achieving milestones like building our first level 1 rocket and winning the research symposium competition at the SpaceVision 2023 conference. Now a junior in college, winning the SGFF/Space Symposium 2024 SEDS Scholarship is an incredible honor. This opportunity will allow me to connect with like-minded individuals, learn from industry experts, and bridge the gap between academia and the professional space industry.
Winning the SGFF 2024 SEDS Scholarship is not just an honor, it’s a validation of my journey from Colombia to the heart of the space industry. This isn’t just an opportunity to connect with professionals who share my passion for space exploration, it’s a chance to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with them, learning from their expertise and contributing my own unique perspective. I’m not just excited, I’m over the moon! This isn’t just a step towards my goal of advancing space exploration, it’s a giant leap for a dreamer who once thought the stars were out of reach.
