EPD Mentoring Committee –  Co-Lead

The Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) is looking for (1) passionate and dedicated volunteer to lead the Mentoring Committee team and activities under the Education & Professional Development (EPD) Platform.

The SGAC Mentoring Program is a flagship initiative designed to connect students and young professionals in the space sector with experienced mentors worldwide. It has connected hundreds of mentors and mentee pairings in space since its incorporation. This program provides a unique opportunity to gain guidance, expand networks, and develop the essential skills needed to thrive in the space industry.

As Mentoring Committee Co-Lead, you will play a strategic leadership role in shaping the program’s direction, scaling its impact, and driving the innovation of its new platform. You will work closely with the other Mentoring Program Co-Lead, the EPD Coordinators, and external partners.

Responsibilities

In summary, the duties that come along with this position include but are not limited to:

The Co-Lead will contribute to and oversee activities aligned with the Mentoring Program’s core activities:

  • Program Design, Improvement and Maintenance
    • Lead the overall execution of the current mentoring program that oversees 400 active mentors in the space industry and organizes 2 sessions twice a year.
    • Design program improvements and enable maintenance of the program to enable high-quality, meaningful mentor–mentee relationships that support long-term professional growth of SGAC members.

  • Team Leadership
    • Lead, engage and motivate a small team of program and social media coordinators to execute on program objectives and goals.
    • Develop team objectives, set timelines and targets every quarter.
    • Represent your team in monthly team meetings and collaborate with other EPD team leads where necessary.
    • Recruit, onboard and engage new team members where necessary.

 

  • Platform Development & Innovation
    • Lead the conceptualization and development plan of an improved mentoring platform that uses digitalization to improve matching processes, in collaboration with external partners.

 

  • Community Development, Speed Mentoring & Resource Creation
    • Build and sustain an engaged, global mentorship community that encourages collaboration, peer learning, and knowledge exchange via Discord and other channels.
    • Create new opportunities once or twice a year such as online Speed Mentoring networking sessions for underrepresented space fields or regions (to be identified for the mentoring cohort).

  • Support Strategic Partnerships & Branding
    • Work with EPD Coordinators to support internal & external partnerships with industry, academia, institutions, and aligned organizations, where necessary.
    • Provide relevant materials and metrics to the EPD Communications & PR Manager, where possible.

This role is ideal for a motivated volunteer with experience in leading a team to execute new initiatives, and is enterprising / has experience with product development, digitalization initiatives, or innovation (optional).

Remark: As one of SGAC’s five fundamental pillars, the EPD Platform has several subteams, each overseen by two Team Leaders who coordinate with the EPD Coordinators. Therefore, the selected candidate will work with the existing Team Leader and report to the EPD Coordinator.

About SGAC’s Education & Professional Development (EPD) Platform:

The EPD Platform is the central coordination arm that organizes, provides, and supports education and professional development activities across SGAC. It aims to serve as a gateway for those interested in starting a career in the space industry, providing various opportunities to gain technical knowledge, receive mentorship, and gain hands-on experience on technical projects. With an unwavering commitment to inclusivity and accessibility, it is an open platform available to the global SGAC Community, providing a wide range of resources and opportunities designed to meet the needs of individuals at different stages of their careers and across all of our regions.

Goals & Objectives

  • Collaborate with the other SGAC Pillars and industry partners to offer high-quality education, S.T.E.A.M. outreach, and professional development opportunities.
  • Build awareness of educational and professional development activities within and outside of SGAC and improve accessibility to space education.
  • Support efforts to translate projects (e.g., hackathons, papers) and launch new EPD initiatives.

Estimated time commitment: 5-8 hours per week.

The position will have a probationary period of 3 months.

Necessary Qualifications (For All Positions)

  • Be a registered SGAC member (Individuals can register for free on the SGAC Website).
  • Be a citizen of a United Nations Member State.
  • Be between 18 and 35 years old during the appointment.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, international environment.
  • Professional fluency in English.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience in leading teams, event coordination, communications and partnerships.
  • Experience with entrepreneurship, product development, digitalization or innovation (optional)
  • Familiarity with SGAC programs and mentoring initiatives.
  • Experience using collaboration tools (Google Workspace, Slack, Zoom, etc.).
